MADISON, Wisc. – After a snow storm in Atlanta, Ga., that alter the Savannah State University women's basketball schedule, the Lady Tigers (2-5) flew out Sunday morning in Charleston, S.C., and fell to University of Wisconsin (7-5) 82-24 later in the day in Kohl Center.
Freshman guard Heniaya Moton led the Lady Tigers with six points and added two rebounds, while freshman center Alexxus Sowell led the team with eight rebounds and added four points. Junior guard Donasja Scott added five points and five rebounds.
Wisconsin scored the first nine points of the game to take a 9-0 lead with 7:01 remaining in the opening quarter, before a Sowell layup got the Lady Tigers on the board to cut the lead to seven points, 9-2, with 5:50 left. The Badgers outscored SSU 13-2 during the rest of the quarter to take an 18-point lead, 22-4, after the first quarter.
A Badger layup gave UW a 20-point lead, 24-4, with 9:09 left in the second quarter, but two made free throws by Scott cut the lead back to 18 points, 24-6, with 8:45 left. Wisconsin outscored SSU 17-4 during the rest of the quarter to take a 31-point, 41-10, halftime lead.
Wisconsin scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to increase its lead to 46 points, 56-10, with 4:58 remaining in the quarter, the Lady Tigers outscored UW 5-4 during the rest of the quarter to cut the lead to 45 points, 60-15 after the third quarter.
A Badger layup gave UW a 47-point lead, 62-15, with 8:36 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Savannah State scored the next six points to cut the lead to 41 points, 62-21, with 7:16 left. Wisconsin outscored SSU 20-3 during the rest of the quarter to win by 58 points.
The Badgers were led by Marsha Howard with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Suzanne Gilreath added 12 poitns and Courtney Fredrickson and Cayla McMorris each added 11 points and six rebounds.
The Lady Tigers continue west to face Oregon State University (6-2) Wednesday at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
