Lady Tigers Drop Two One Run Decisions To Edward Waters

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State got strong pitching performances from Donnea Allen and Aaliyah Martin but could not capitalize, dropping a doubleheader to Edward Waters on Friday afternoon at the SSU Softball Field.

Allen pitched a four hitter and struck out seven batters in a 2-0 loss in the first game while Martin stuck out five and yielded just two earned runs in a 6-5 setback, in the second game.

The losses dropped the Lady Tigers to 24-15 overall and 14-9 in conference play.

The first game was scoreless until the top of the sixth when Edward Waters scored twice which turned out to be the only runs of the game.

Both teams left five runners on base and SSU left runners in scoring position four times.

Savannah State only had two hits in the game with Neveah Ford bunting her way on base the first inning and Ambria Guye hitting a single in the sixth inning.

EWU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second contest but Savannah State answered in the bottom half of the inning when Jayla Alexander hit a two-run single to center field that scored Ansley Hudson and Neveah Ford.

Edward Waters added four runs off three hits in the top of the third to expand their lead to 5-2.

In the bottom of the third, Milani Dunning entered the game as a pinch runner for Shamiya Raines and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ford to cut SSU's deficit to 5-3.

The Lady Tigers tied the game in the fourth as Alexander drew a walk and Phaedra Smith hit a single. A groundout by Jayla Givens allowed Alexander to score and a single by Madison Starling-Martin brought home Smith for a 5-5 tie.

EWU went ahead with a run in the sixth.

Alexander led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and after outs by Smith and Givens, Starling-Martin was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for Ariana Battle who struck out to end the inning.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Hudson hit a single to left field but the next batter, Ford, hit into a double play to end the game.

Alexander had two hits and two RBI for SSU while Hudson had two hits.

Savannah State will close out their home and SIAC schedule on Saturday against Edward Waters at 12 noon. It will also be Senior Day as the program will honor nine players who will take part in their final home contests of their collegiate careers in a ceremony prior to first pitch.
