Lady Tigers Fall To Albany State In Home Matchup

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State's women's basketball team lost a hard fought game to in-state rival Albany State on Thursday night in Tiger Arena.

Ansley Hicks started the game with a jumper to give SSU a 2-0 lead. A jumper from Sanai Chisholm put the Lady Tigers ahead 4-3 and another jumper by Chisholm made the score 6-5 in favor of Savannah State with 6:06 left in the first quarter.

Albany State closed the quarter with a 20-4 run to take a 25-10 lead into the second quarter.

The Golden Rams took control of the game in the second quarter as they went into the half with a 48-21 advantage.

Savannah State made a statement in the third quarter, outscoring ASU 24-17.

During the quarter, the Lady Tigers made 53 percent of their shots from the field and connected on 2-of-3 shots beyond the arc while hitting 4-of-5 free throw attempts.

SSU trailed by 29 early in the third quarter before getting as close as 17.

Down by 24 with just over three minutes on the clock, the Lady Tigers used jumpers from Chisholm and Jaliyah Harper and a 3-pointer from Saniyah Rice to get within 62-45, during a 7-0 run.

Savannah State scored 14 points in the final quarter with Haylee Malcum getting five points while Harper scored four, Chisholm had three and Rice chipped in two.

For the game, SSU scored 20 points off 23 Albany State turnovers.

Hicks had three steals, 15 points and a career-high eight rebounds for Savannah State. Chisholm added 12 points and three assists while Rice had the best night of her young career with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Harper scored nine points  and four assists and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds. Raven Birt had seven points and three assists and Malcum finished with five points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Savannah State (7-12, 6-12 SIAC) will host Spring Hill on February 8 at 1 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
