SAVANNAH, Ga.- In a battle of the Lady Tigers, Savannah State came up short in their 78-39 loss to Edward Waters on Saturday afternoon in Tiger Arena.
SSU was led by
Sanai Chisholm with 13 points while
Haylee Malcum pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
Edward Waters scored the first points of the game from the free throw line but a jumper by
Jaliyah Harper knotted the score at 2-2.
EWU scored the next 19 points but a pair of free throws by
Makaila Johnson closed the first quarter with Savannah State trailing 21-4.
Savannah State started the second quarter with a jumper by Harper and a free throw by
Ansley Hicks but Edward Waters responded with a 12-0 run.
EWU ran their lead to 31 late in the quarter but Savannah State finished strong with Chisholm hitting a 3-pointer, jumper and a free throw to send the Lady Tigers into the half down 40-15.
Starting with a 3-pointer by
Raven Birt, SSU kept pace with Edward Waters for much of the third quarter until the final four and a half minutes when they held Savannah State to a late layup by Malcum.
The teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter as Edward Waters outscored SSU 15-13 with Birt and
Saniya Rice scoring four points apiece, Chisholm adding a 3-pointer and Hicks making a layup.
Birt ended the game with seven points and Harper had six ad five rebounds. Rice and Johnson scored four points apiece, Hicks chipped in three and Malcum scored two.
Before the game started, SSU recognized their senior players. being honored were Harper, Birt,
Amani Hamilton and K'yla Hankerson.
Savannah State (7-14, 6-14 SIAC) will be on the road for the next three games, starting with Allen on February 16.
