Lady Tigers Stumble Against Georgia Southwestern State

Savannah, Ga — The Savannah State Tigers faced a tough challenge as they were swept by Georgia Southwestern in a doubleheader, with the Hurricanes securing commanding victories in both games. GSW won Game One 8-0 and Game Two 19-2, with both victories showcasing their offensive depth.

Prior to the contest, Savannah State recognized seniors Zarria Smith and Caliegh Powell, who took to the field for the final time in their collegiate careers on Senior Day.

Game One: Georgia Southwestern 8, Savannah State 0:

Game one began with solid defense from both teams. The Hurricanes were able to get a few hits, but they were caught in the outfield for fly outs. Savannah State held strong, and the score remained 0-0 at the end of the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, the Lady Tigers struggled in their first at-bats, with two outs at first base and no runs to show. The inning ended with the score still tied at 0-0.

Georgia Southwestern broke the tie in the top of the second, with a runner successfully stealing home. They added another run with a ground double to make it 2-0. SSU's defense managed to stop further damage, but the Tigers were trailing. Savannah State couldn't get anything going in their half, with a strikeout and two ground outs ending the inning quickly. The score remained 2-0 in favor of GSW.

GSW's offense continued to click, with a combination of hits, steals, and aggressive baserunning. Another runner ended up successfully stealing home, and the Hurricanes added another run to extend their lead to 3-0. The Tigers managed to get the final out, but GSW was in control. Savannah State once again failed to capitalize in their next at-bats, going down quietly with no runs and no runners on base.

Georgia Southwestern extended their lead further, scoring a combination of runs through timely hits and another home run, pushing the score to 8-0. SSU's defense was left scrambling to contain the Hurricanes' powerful offense. Savannah State went scoreless again, unable to break through GSW's defense. The Tigers were struggling to find any offensive rhythm.

GSW scored more runs in the top of the fifth, continuing to dominate. Savannah State's defense couldn't stop the onslaught, and the score remained 8-0. The Lady Tigers were unable to mount any offense, leaving one runner on base and ending the inning without scoring.

Game 2: Georgia Southwestern 19, Savannah State 2 (April 2nd):

In game two, Georgia Southwestern started strong once again, scoring early with a ground ball that brought in the first run. SSU managed to get a couple of outs, but the Hurricanes' offense continued to pressure, and the score stood at 1-0 after the top of the first. Savannah State answered in the bottom of the first, loading the bases with a hit batter, a walk, and a ground ball. The Tigers scored one run on Kennedy Alsbrook's bases loaded RBI walk, tying the game 1-1, but GSW's defense held firm, and SSU left three runners on base.

GSW took control in the second inning, scoring multiple runs with a combination of stolen bases and aggressive hitting. The Hurricanes stole home twice, and a double brought in three more runs to make it 7-1. A home run followed, adding two more runs and making it 9-1. GSW continued to dominate, putting pressure on SSU's defense. Savannah State's offense was once again shut out in the bottom of the second, unable to get a rally going. The score remained 9-1.

Georgia Southwestern continued their offensive barrage, adding even more runs to the scoreboard. A double brought in two more runs, pushing the score to 11-1. The Hurricanes weren't done yet, stealing bases and scoring again, making it 13-1. SSU went scoreless again, unable to get any runners on base or bring in any runs.

GSW kept the pressure on, scoring more runs in the top of the fourth. Two home runs and a double added to the tally, bringing the score to 16-1. The Tigers were unable to respond in the bottom of the fourth, as GSW's defense kept them at bay. The Hurricanes continued to add to their lead, scoring more runs and pushing the score to 19-1. Savannah State was able to get an out but couldn't slow down the GSW offense.

Savannah State managed to score one run in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 19-2, but it wasn't enough to avoid the mercy rule. The game ended early, with GSW claiming a dominant 19-2 victory.

The Lady Tigers will hit the road and return to SIAC play on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series against Benedict College.
