SAVANNAH, Ga.- It wasn't the way
Mya Byrd and
Myasia Jones wanted to end their regular season as Savannah State suffered a 74-62 loss to Albany State on Wednesday evening in Tiger Arena.
Byrd and Jones, the only seniors on the roster, led the team with Byrd finishing with 15 points, three assists, three steals and two blocks while Jones added 13 points, seven rebounds, six steals and three assists.
Albany State scored the first six points of the game as they sprinted out to a 17-5 lead.
Trailing 19-7 with 2:45 left in the quarter, SSU finished with a 3-pointer and two free throws by Byrd and a layup by
Raven Birt to cut their deficit to 21-14.
The Golden Rams (9-17, 5-15) started the second quarter with a 10-0 run to increase their advantage to 17.
Savannah State trailed 37-19 with 1:45 on the clock before ending the half with a pair of free throws by Jones, a layup by
Ansley Hicks and a 3-pointer by Byrd to go into the half down 39-26.
Another 10-0 run to start the third quarter pushed ASU's lead to 49-26.
Albany State's lead reached 27 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter and SSU's defense limited the Golden Rams to just one field goal as they sliced their deficit to 20 at 61-41.
Savannah State (11-14, 7-12) shot 50 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, out-scoring ASU 21-13.
Down by 18, the Lady Tigers used a 8-0 run to get within ten with a layup by
Jazmin Thornton followed by a layup, free throw and a 3-pointer by Jones.
Thornton had eight points for SSU, Birt and
Jayden Boykin scored seven each while Hicks and
Sanai Chisholm netted six point apiece.
Savannah State will host Kentucky State in the opening round of the SIAC Tournament on March 1 at 1 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
