JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Freshman forward
Jazmin Thornton had a game-high 15 points to lead Savannah State in a 58-50 loss to Edward Waters on Saturday afternoon in the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
The LaGrange, Georgia native made 6-of-7 shots from the field and also had seven rebounds and a pair of steals for the Lady Tigers.
Savannah State led 46-43 with 6:24 remaining but Edward Waters used a 13-2 run to grab a eight point lead and put the game away.
SSU fell behind by 11 in the first quarter and trailed 17-8 after the first ten minutes of play.
The Lady Tigers deficit grew to a dozen in the second quarter but they used a 8-2 spurt during the final four minutes to go into the half down 28-24.
Savannah State trailed by as many as 11 in the third quarter and with less than two minutes remaining found themselves down 39-29 before scoring the next six points to close their gap to four.
Down 42-35 as they entered the fourth quarter, SSU started the final ten minutes with a jumper from Thornton, a 3-pointer by
Mya Byrd and a jumper and free throw by
Jayden Boykin to take a 43-42 lead.
The game was tied at 43 before a layup and free throw by Boykin gave SSU a 46-43 advantage.
Edward Waters (14-8, 10-7 SIAC) answered with their 13-2 run and Savannah State could not answer down the stretch.
Byrd added 14 points and four assists for the Lady Tigers and Boykin chipped in 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Jaliyah Harper scored six points while
Myasia Jones and Jacksonville native
Ansley Hicks had two points each.
Savannah State (11-12, 7-10 SIAC) will play Fort Valley State in Tiger Arena on February 24 at 5:30 p.m.
