Lady Tigers Win Third Straight, Hold Off Kentucky State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- In a game where Savannah State went 2-for-11 from the field in the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers made up for it my going 11 of 13 from the free throw line.

The result was a 70-68 win over Kentucky State on Saturday afternoon in Tiger Arena.

The contest also had a dozen ties and four lead changes.

The game was knotted at 20 after one quarter of play and the Thorobreds took a 38-33 lead into the half.

Savannah State held KSU to ten points in the third quarter as they went ahead 55-48. 

With 9:19 left in the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers led 58-48 but Kentucky State rallied to tie the game at 61 at the 4:31 mark.

SSU only made one field goal down the stretch but by going 7-for-8 from the free throw line they kept Kentucky State at a distance.

Savannah State finished the game shooting 84.2 percent from the charity stripe. SSU made all 12 attempts in the third quarter.

The Lady Tigers opened the game strong, scoring the first six points before KSU woke up and answered by scoring the next eight points.

The remainder of the first quarter to close, with nobody leading my more than two points. 

Early in the second quarter the contest was tied at 22 but Kentucky State put together a run that gave them a 38-27 advantage with 1:36 remaining before intermission.

Savannah State closed the half with the final six points, going into the locker room down 38-33.

SSU was able to tie the game at 42, following a 3-pointer by Jayden Boykin with 7:16 showing.

Down 44-42, the Lady Tigers used a 11-0 run to take the lead for good.

A jumper and a free throw by Jazmin Thornton put SSU ahead by ten early in the fourth quarter only to see Kentucky State tie the game less than five minutes later.

Both baskets in the fourth quarter were made by Thornton. The sophomore forward made a jumper with 9:19 showing on the clock and a layup with 2:07 remaining.

Sanai Chisholm led all scorers with 16 points. She also had four steals, three assists and three rebounds. Thornton had 15 points, Jaliyah Harper finished with 13 points and eight rebounds while Boykin came off the bench to add 12 points. Haylee Malcum contributed seven rebounds and five blocks.

Savannah State improves to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the SIAC. SSU travels to Albany State on December 11.
