MOBILE, Ala.- Savannah State held off a late rally by Spring Hill and went on to defeat the Badgers 64-60 on Saturday afternoon at the Outlaw Recreation Center.
The Lady Tigers led by seven early in the fourth quarter before Spring Hill tied the game at 51 with 5:28 remaining.
SSU answered by scoring the next six points to go ahead 57-51 at the 3:39 mark.
A 3-pointer by the Badgers cut the Savannah State lead to three but a layup by
Haylee Malcum followed by a 3-pointer by
Jayden Boykin increased the SSU lead to 62-54 with 2:26 showing on the clock.
Spring Hill was able to get as close as 62-59 with under a minute remaining before SSU closed the contest with a pair of free throws by Boykin.
The game had five ties and six lead changes. SSU won the rebounding battle 41 to 32 and had more points in the paint (34 to 24).
Savannah State led 13-7 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter and held a 15-9 advantage at the end of the first ten minutes of action.
The Lady Tigers stretched their lead to 26-18 late in the second quarter before Spring Hill closed the half with the final seven points as SSU took a 26-25 lead into intermission.
Spring Hill led 33-31 in the third quarter but SSU answered with 9-2 spurt to go back in front 40-35 with just under four minutes left.
The Badgers trimmed their deficit to two before back-to-back layups by
Ansley Hicks pushed the Savannah State advantage to 46-40 with 12 seconds left in the quarter.
Another layup by Hicks along with a jumper by
Jaliyah Harper to start the fourth quarter gave SSU a 50-43 lead with 7:59 left.
Jayden Boykin had game-high in points (18) and rebounds (8) for SSU.
Ansley Hicks came off the bench to add 16 points, six rebounds and three steals while
Jaliyah Harper chipped in 12 points and six rebounds.
Savannah State shot 50 percent from the field in the second and third quarters and finished the game shooting 43.1 percent. SSU also made 11 of 14 free throw attempts.
The win improves Savannah State to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the SIAC as they head home to finish the 2025 portion of their schedule hosting Tuskegee (December 17) and Miles (Dec. 19).
