Lady Tigers Breeze Past Trinity Baptist In Home Opener

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Kyla Grant and Mya Byrd both had double doubles to help Savannah State win their home opener, a 122-48 non-conference victory over Trinity Baptist (0-5) in a game played at Tiger Arena on Thursday evening.

Grant scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds while Byrd had 16 points and dished out ten assists.

Savannah State scored the first nine points of the lopsided contest with K'lya Hankerson making a layup followed by back-to-back jumpers by Alayah Birch and Grant and a 3-pointer by Byrd.

The Lady Tigers increased their lead to 11 but Trinity finished the final three minutes of the first quarter with a 11-3 spurt to pull within 20-17.

SSU started the second quarter with a 23-1 run to go ahead 43-18 with three and a half minutes remaining in the quarter. 

Ahead 50-25 with 1:11 showing on the clock, Birch finished the first half scoring the final seven points for Savannah State with two layups, a jumper and a free throw to give the Orange & Blue a commanding 57-27 halftime advantage.

A layup by Grant jump-started a 16-0 run to start the third quarter that put SSU ahead 73-27 with 6:36 left in the quarter.

The Lady Tigers led by as many as 57 in the third quarter and went into the fourth quarter with a 92-39 lead.

During a 19-0 run to start the fourth quarter, SSU hit the century mark on a layup by Hankerson with 7:43 left.

With 1:07 remaining, the Eagles were down 116-48 and Savannah State closed the game with a pair of layups by Amani Hamilton and another by Raven Birt.

The Lady Tigers shot 38.1 percent from the field in the first quarter but ended the game shooting 57.3 percent from the floor and 43.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Savannah State out-rebounded Trinity 54 to 32 and scored 50 points off 33 turnovers committed by the Eagles.

SSU had 24 second chance points, 82 points in the paint and 48 fast break points.

Hankerson added 19 points and seven rebounds, Hamilton scored 16 points, Birch had 15 and Jaliyah Harper chipped in ten off the bench.

The win gives Savannah State a 2-1 record as they head to Georgia Southwestern State on November 23 at 2 p.m.
