Lady Tigers Too Much For Morris College, 102-41

SAVANNAH, Ga.-  Playing their first home game of the 2024 portion of their schedule, the Savannah State women's basketball team did not disappoint their fans with a 102-41 non-conference win over Morris College in Tiger Arena on January 8, 2024.
 
It was the Lady Tigers fifth win in a row.
 
SSU out-rebounded the Hornets 67 to 36 and scored 35 points off of Morris' 26 turnovers. The Lady Tigers outscored Morris in the paint, 64 to18 and had 41 fast break points.
 
Savannah State dominated Morris in the opening quarter as they shot 72 percent from the field and finished the quarter with a 32-8 lead.
 
SSU raced out to a 29-2 advantage and didn't allow Morris to make a shot from the field until it was 2:33 remaining in the quarter.
 
The Lady Tigers scored the first seven points of the second quarter to expand their cushion to 39-8.
 
Morris was able to whittle their deficit down to 25 with 4:44 remaining but Savannah State finished the half with a 12-3 spurt that was capped by a 3-pointer by Jacquece Alston at the buzzer to send the teams into intermission with SSU holding a 55-21 lead.
 
Savannah State scored 16 straight points during a 26-5 run to began the third quarter to expand their lead to 81-26 with 33 seconds left.
 
The quarter ended with Mya Byrd burying a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining for a 84-29 advantage.
 
With 8:29 left in the contest, Raven Birt scored on a fast break layup give Savannah State a 90-29 lead and ten points shy of hitting the century mark.
 
Following Birt's basket, SSU weaved their way to score 100 points as  Talia Hamilton and Amani Hamilton made one free throw apiece, Jasmine Wills made two free throws, Aniaya Donaldson made a layup and Wills added two more free throws to five the Lady Tigers 98 points.
 
SSU made the score 100-36 on Demyka Tyler's layup with three and a half minutes left.
 
It was the second time this season, Savannah State scored at least 100 points in a game. During the season opener on November 17, SSU hung 114 points on Trinity Baptist.
 
La'Quasia Lampkin powered SSU to victory with a double-double of 13 rebounds and 12 points.
 
Byrd led all scorers with 23 points. The Georgia State transfer made 9 of 11 shots from the field and hit five of six 3-point attempts.
 
Amari Heard had 20 points and Wills added a career-high 11 points off the bench.
 
Rounding out the SSU scoring were Alston (9), Talia Hamilton (8), Amani Hamilton (6), Aaliyah Carlock (4), Donaldson (3), Nyla Allen (2), Birt (2) and Tyler (2).
 
All Lady Tigers who saw action had at least two rebounds and all but Jashiyah Jones scored but she did contribute six rebounds, four steals, three assists and one block.
 
Morris (1-8) was led by Kamiah Fulton who had 10 points.
 
Savannah State (8-3) will go after their sixth consecutive victory on Jan. 13 when they travel to Fort Valley State for a key SIAC match-up.
