Lampkin Sets New Career-High In Rebounds In Win Over Spring Hill

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Ta'Quasia Lampkin had a career-best 21 rebounds to go along with her eight points, three blocks, two steals and two assists to help Savannah State close out the 2023 portion of their schedule with a 62-43 win over Spring Hill on December 18, 2023 in a game played in Tiger Arena.
 
Lampkin had a 16 rebound effort against Georgia Southwestern on Dec. 2, 2023.
 
The school single game rebounding record was set on January 4, 1992 when Mabel Sanders had 27 against LeMoyne-Owen. That same season, Sanders led Division II in rebounds.
 
Savannah State got off to a fast start against Spring Hill with Mya Byrd hitting a 3-pointer and then a defensive rebound by Jacquece Alston led to a fast-break layup by Amani Hamilton for a quick 5-0 lead.
 
After a basketball by the Badgers, SSU used a 8-1 run to expand their lead to 13-3 with 3:38 left in the opening quarter.
 
Spring Hill was able to get within six but trailed SSU 16-9 after the quarter ended.
 
Two quick baskets by the visitors from Mobile, Alabama cut SSU's lead to three but the Lady Tigers responded with Alston scoring six points during a 10-1 run that gave them a 26-14 edge at the 4:01 mark.
 
Savannah State was held scoreless the final two minutes of the quarter while the Badgers finished with eight unanswered points to whittle their deficit to 29-25 at the half.
 
Both teams came out of the locker room sluggish to start the second half.
 
Savannah State outscored Spring Hill 18-9 in the third quarter but only made 25 percent of their shots from the floor. The Lady Tigers did manage to connect on three 3-pointers with Byrd hitting two and Jashiyah Jones making one. The Badgers made four turnovers in the third quarter and made just 3 of 13 shots from the floor.
 
SSU led by as many as 15 in the third quarter and held a 47-34 advantage going into the final ten minutes of play.
 
Savannah State's defense limited the Badgers to make 17.6 percent of their shots in the fourth quarter. Spring Hill's last field goal came with 4:23 left on a 3-pointer by Kellyn Hunter and their last point was a free throw with 3:48 remaining by Yolanda Nelson.
 
SSU was ahead by 11 following Hunter's shot but finished the contest with a 9-1 spurt to win by 19.
 
Byrd had 19 points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks for Savannah State while Nyla Allen chipped in 10 points, four steals and four assists.
 
Jones hit three 3-pointers for her nine points while Alston had 6 points. Hamilton and Ja'Siiyah Holmes scored four points each and Kiara Turner had two points.
 
Savannah State scored 23 points off 21 Spring Hill turnovers and also dominated the Badgers with 30 points in the paint, 20 fast break points and 14 second chance points.
 
The Badgers were led by Hunter's 16 points. Marta Duda, Spring Hill's leading scorer, was held to eight points.
 
The win gives SSU a 5-3 overall record and a 3-2 conference record. The Lady Tigers will not play again until January 4, 2024 when they travel to LeMoyne-Owen.
