SAVANNAH, Ga.— Tonight, Savannah State women's basketball play, perhaps, the most important game of their regular season schedule.
The No. 20 Lady Tigers host Benedict College, reigning Southern Intercollegiate Athletic (SIAC) Champions and the only team Savannah State has lost to this season.
Savannah State trails Benedict (18-6, 11-2 SIAC) in the SIAC East Division standings by one conference win. A win tonight will all but seal up the divisional title for Savannah State as they head into the final five games of the season.
In the first meeting of the two Tigers, on January 22, Savannah State outscored Benedict 24-18 in the first half, on way to what they were hoping would be their 15th consecutive victory.
But Benedict pulled away with a strong second half, outscoring Savannah State 55-40 for a 74-65 win, handing the Lady Tigers their only loss of the 2021-2022 season.
Savannah State women's basketball improved to 21-1 last week with three big wins. The Lady Tigers earned their 10th conference win with a 59-51 victory over Albany State and then beat Morris by a spread of 77 points (123-46). They closed the week with a 79-52 win over Allen in Tiger Arena.
The Lady Tigers are outscoring their opponents by a 20 point margin, averaging 78.0 points a game. They are ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division II in scoring margin, and No. 3 in wins/loss percentage. They lead the SIAC in win/loss percentage, three-point field goal percentage, three-point field goal defense, scoring offense, scoring margin, field goal percentage, field goal percentage defense, and defensive rebounds per game.

SAVANNAH, Ga.—Savannah State men's basketball hope to parlay a big win on Saturday against Allen into a victory against the top team in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) tonight.
The Tigers host Benedict College, who currently lead the SIAC East Division standings with a 12-2 conference record. Savannah State is currently in the middle of the rankings with a 6-6 SIAC record.
In the team's last meeting, on January 22, Benedict had a strong second half that propelled them to an 80-74 win despite Savannah State's 34-32 lead at the midway point.
But Savannah State has the right mojo to take down the top team in their division. Sharpshooting guards Avery Joyner, Marcus Scott and Trey DeLoach—all averaging double figures in every outing—could be key to overwhelming Benedict on the offensive side of the court.
Defensively, DeLoach and Daryl Richardson will shake things up. But Benedict can't sleep on the twins, Eleik and Elavian Bowles or the Tigers' bench of other great scorers, like Ayjay Plain, Za'Khari Cobb and Larson Ashford, who could all be game-changers in tonight's contest.
Today's game is open to the general public, but seating in the lower bowl will be restricted. The following guidelines will be in place:
- Guests are strongly encouraged to wear a mask or face covering and continue to maintain social distance
- Fans, media, and students may not have any physical contact with student-athletes or staff at any time during, before or after the contest
- The clear bag procedure will be in effect for access to Tiger Arena
- Tiger Arena will be locked down 1.5 hours prior to tip-off
- Doors will open one hour prior to tip-off
- General admission and Will Call are located at the West Entrance to Tiger Arena
- Students may enter the arena through the East Entrance ONLY (Doors facing the Student Union) with valid I.D.
