Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 22 Lady Tigers Pick Up Win No. 15

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Savannah State women's basketball picked up their 15th win of the season on Monday beating Allen University 92-81 in a non-conference bout, bouncing back from their first and only loss of the season the previous Saturday.

At 15-1 and 8-1 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play, the Lady Tigers continue to lead the conference standings. They are ranked No. 22 in the WBCA Coaches Poll.

The Lady Tigers opened Monday's game as they have most of their games this season with a big run, going up 5-0 in only a few minutes. By the 4:39 mark, they led 20-12, but Allen closed the gap down the stretch cutting Savannah State's lead to 29-23 at the end of the first.

Allen continued to push into the second period. At the 8:02 mark, a jump shot cut the Lady Tigers lead to 33-30. But the Lady Tigers' defense stepped up through the rest of the period, holding Allen at bay. By the half, Savannah State led 49-41.

Savannah State outscored Allen by only a few points in the final half (15-13 in the third and 28-27 in the fourth) but coupled with the first half advantage, it was enough to seal up the 9-point win.

Six Lady Tigers finished in double figures. Le'Andrea Gillis led the Lady Tigers with 17 points. Bria Gibbs recorded 15 on the night, while Ta'Quasia Lampkin scored 12, and Shekinah Howard put away 11. Ta'Kyla Austin and Nyla Allen each added 10 points.

One of the keys to Savannah State's run this year has been an overpowering offense. They've won 9 of their games by 10 or more points and are outscoring their opponents by 20.9 points on average.

They have the No. 14 best scoring offense in NCAA Division II, and are ranked No. 28 nationally in field-goal percentage and No. 3 in scoring margin. Savannah State leads the conference in assists per game, field-goal percentage, scoring offense, three-point field goal defense, three-point field goal percentage, and win-loss percentage.

Savannah State faces a good Albany State (8-11, 7-3 SIAC) team in Tiger Arena on Saturday, Jan. 29. Tip-off for Greek Night is set for 1 p.m.
