No. 22 Lady Tigers Wallop Clark Atlanta En Route To 14-0

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's basketball came out firing on Monday and held on the gas to finish a 92-57 rout of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division foe Clark Atlanta in Tiger Arena.

The Lady Tigers improved to 14-0 and 8-0 in SIAC action with Monday's win and held on to the No. 1 spot in the SIAC East Division standings.

On Tuesday, Savannah State moved into the No. 22 spot of the WBCA Coaches Poll. They were not ranked in the D2SIDA National Media Poll, but are ranked No. 6 in the D2SIDA South Region Poll.

Savannah State opened Monday's game with a 14-4 run and never looked back. By the end of the first period, they led Clark Atlanta 31-9. The Lady Tigers stuttered a bit in the second period, scoring only 16 points, but again held the Lady Panthers to only nine for a 47-18 lead at the half.

In the final two periods, Savannah State rebounded on the offensive end putting up 45 more points for the final rout of the visitors from Atlanta.

Bria Gibbs led the field with 22 points and 18 rebounds on the night. It was Gibbs sixth double-double of the season. The junior leads the SIAC in field-goal percentage and is ranked 35th nationally. In double-doubles, she is third in the SIAC and 32nd nationally.

Per usual, Gibbs wasn't alone in double figures for the Lady Tigers. Azhana Maxwell had a strong outing with 15 points and Ta'Kyla Austin added 11 in the win. In every game but one, at least two Lady Tigers have scored in double figures this season.

Savannah State shot 51.5 percent from the floor as a team hitting 34-of-66 field goal attempts and 6-of-16 three-point attempts. They led by as much 41 points in the fourth quarter and scored 25 of their points on fast breaks.

The Lady Tigers will test their moxie this coming Saturday against SIAC reigning champions Benedict College, who's 12-5 on the season and 7-1 in conference action. Game time in Columbia, South Carolina is 1 p.m.

  • Savannah State leads the SIAC in several statistical categories: Assists; assists per game; Field-goal percentage, field-goal percentage defense; assists per game; scoring margin; scoring offense; and three-point field goal percentage.
  • The Lady Tigers have beat most of their opponents this year by double figures. Of their 14 games, they've won 9 by 10 or more points
