Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Tigers Fall to Benedict, 73-81, ending three-game winning streak

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Lady Tigers four-game winning streak, marked by high offensive output, came to an end this week.

Seeking some payback after losing to Benedict College in their season opener, Savannah State women's basketball played the reigning Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Champions tough in the sixth game of the season, but fell just short of picking up their fourth-consecutive victory, losing 73-81.

The Lady Tigers are 4-2 on the season with one remaining home game on the schedule—a Feb. 28 matchup against Allen University set for 2 p.m. tip-off.

Following a sudden, overnight decision by the SIAC this week to cancel their championship seasons for spring and winter sports, Savannah State will wait to see if they've played well enough to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Regional Championship in mid-March. The Division II selection committee will announce the bracket on March 7.

Despite the close loss to Benedict, the Lady Tigers again saw multiple players hit double scoring figures. Leading the pack was Bria Gibbs. The junior transfer put up a season-high 21 points. Freshman point guard Nyla Allen had her best outing of the season with 17 points, followed closely by scoring stalwart Le'Andrea Gills who put away 16 points.

Gibbs leads the team in scoring and rebounding this year, averaging 15.7 points a game and 11.5 rebounds a game. Gillis and Azhana Maxwell are each averaging 13.3 points a game.
