SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State softball dropped a non-conference doubleheader with the College of Coastal Georgia, (7-8, 1-6) in their third and fourth games of the young 2020 season.

The Lady Tigers, mostly comprised of freshman this year, showed ample strength at the plate through both games, but it wasn't enough to overcome last year's Sun Conference Champions.

Coastal Georgia opened the first inning of the first game with three runs on two hits after a costly fielding error from the Lady Tigers. But SSU responded big time in the bottom of the opening inning.

At the top of the SSU batting order,
Morgan Green singled to reach and then stole two straight bases to get into scoring position.
Stacie Smith walked and then stole second. Green stole home and Smith scored on an error for SSU's first two runs of the game.
Kameryn Baker reach on a single, and later scored on a wild pitch.

Pitcher Allisyn Ferrell singled to score
Shayna Byers who reached on a single giving SSU a 4-3 lead into the second inning. Â After Coastal Georgia was unable to respond in the top of the second, SSU put up one more run for a 5-3 lead into the third. They added another run in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-3 lead.

Coastal Georgia added one run in the fifth, but still trailed SSU 4-6 into the sixth inning. Then the Mariners went to work. Coastal Georgia platted four runs on four hits and SSU committed two costly errors in the pivotal sixth inning as the visitors took an 8-6 lead. In the bottom frame, the Lady Tigers tacked on a single run on two hits. A scoreless seventh inning sealed up the final score.

Ferrell recorded her second pitching loss of the season after a full 7.0 innings in the circle. She allowed one earned run (seven unearned) on 10 hits with one strikeout. Paige Alt, pitching in relief for Coastal Georgia, earned her first win of the season after 4.1 innings of work. She allowed one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts.

Savannah State spread out 11 hits over the seven innings, with Green leading the entire field with four hits and two runs.
Da'Ondalyn Simmons and
Jocelyn Lozano each had two hits for SSU in the loss.

In the second game, Coastal Georgia only managed three hits through the entire seven innings, facing Savannah State's
Mikayla Smith and Ferrell. Smith had seven walks and four costly wild pitches, opening the door for the Mariners to score without many hits.

The Lady Tigers were strong from the plate in the loss however, putting up seven hits, including doubles from Baker and
Rickell Holden. Green and Smith each had two hits in the loss but SSU was unable to translate hits into runs, stranding eight runners.
Hope Dickerson picked up her first pitching win of the season after 5.0 innings in the circle. She allowed one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts. Smith was tagged with her second loss of the season after 4.0 innings of work. She allowed six earned runs on three hits with one strikeout.
