ATLANTA, Ga. – In the final minutes of a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game with Clark Atlanta, the Savannah State women's basketball team turned up the heat to walk away with their fourth conference of the season, beating the Panthers 77-74.
At the 4:39 mark, Clark Atlanta's Courtney Hall tied the game up for the eighth time with a good jump shot. After two minutes of a scoreless back and forth, freshman
Amari Heard sank a layup to open a 6-0 run for the Lady Tigers that included good baskets from
Azhana Maxwell and
Le'Andrea Gillis.
The small run proved to be just enough as Savannah State outscored the Panthers 10-7 in the final three minutes to secure the win.
The Lady Tigers improve to 9-4 on the season and 4-4 in the SIAC. They are currently tied for third place in the SIAC East Division standings with Clark Atlanta. They both trail Paine College (5-4), and Benedict College (7-1).
Savannah State women's basketball has the top scoring offense in the SIAC currently, averaging 78 points a game. Gillis leads the Lady Tigers and the SIAC in scoring, averaging 21.3 points a game.
Gillis led the entire field on Monday with 18 points. She went 6-for-19 from the field and, for the third straight game, 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Maxwell was close behind on Monday with 16 points of her own. Heard put up double digit numbers for the sixth time in her debut season, scoring 14 in the win.
Monday's win ended a four-game road swing for the Lady Tigers. They return home this week with two crucial SIAC games. Savannah State hosts East Division leader Benedict College on Saturday and then will host the second place Paine College in Tiger Arena on Monday.
Saturday's game with Benedict, a Blue Out, will tip-off at 1 p.m.
Monday's game is set for 5:30 p.m. Both games are doubleheaders with the men's teams playing 30 minutes after the end of the women's game.
