Lady Tigers dominate Morris College, 83-52, in final non-conference game

SUMTER, S.C. – Savannah State women's basketball picked up their seventh win of the season on Thursday with an 83-52 rout of Morris College.

It was their final non-conference game of the season. SSU heads into an 11-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) run to close out the 2019-20 regular season.

The Lady Tigers have the top scoring offense in the SIAC, led by the conference's top scorer Le'Andrea Gillis, who is averaging 21.1 points a game.

Gillis again led the Lady Tigers on Thursday with 21 points. It was her seventh game this season with at least 20 points. Azhana Maxwell had one of her best career outings as well, putting up a season-high 20 points.

Savannah State shot 42.6% from the field against Morris, hitting 33 of their 77 field goal attempts. Newcomer Ta'Kyla Austin put in 15 points for SSU while Robbi Allen tacked on 13.

The Lady Tigers outscored Morris 33-25 in the opening half, but pushed out even further through the final two quarters, putting up a combined 50 points in a display of offensive domination.

Savannah State hits the road this weekend for two SIAC games at Fort Valley State (Jan. 18 at 1 p.m.) and Clark Atlanta (Jan. 20 at 3 p.m.).

They return home for a two-game SIAC run next weekend. On Jan. 25, they face the best team in the SIAC East Division, Benedict College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. in Tiger Arena. The following Monday, the Lady Tigers face Paine College in Tiger Arena at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Tigers will get help from a deeper bench through the final conference stretch. Over the holiday break, SSU added two new players to its active roster. Autumn Westmoreland, a 6 foot 1 forward from Las Vegas, Nevada and Kereen Thompson, a 6 foot 1 forward from Riverdale, Ga., will give SSU stronger presence in the paint for the rest of the season.
