TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Savannah State dropped a double-header to Florida A&M by scores of 1-0 and 5-2 at the Lady Rattler Complex.
In the first game, the only score of the contest came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Shakayla Nixon reached base on a fielding error by Savannah State's
Jocelyn Lozano and later scored on a single by Jamesia Stoudemire for what turned out the game winning run.
The game was a pitcher's duel with SSU's
Faith Dickerson tossing a two-hitter with two strikeouts while FAMU pitcher Kyaira Brown hurling a one-hitter with five strikeouts.
Savannah State's only hit came in the top of the sixth when
Stephanie Vargas led off with a single. Vargas advanced to third but was unable to score.
SSU (6-22, 1-7 MEAC) made two errors in the game and the Rattlers committed one error. Both team stranded three runners on base.
In the second game,
Cortni Jones hit a two-run home run for Savannah State in the seventh inning but the Lady Tigers would fall short by three runs.
FAMU took a 2-0 lead in the game with runs in the first and second innings. A three-run double by Stoudemire in the sixth increase the Rattlers lead to 5-0.
Stacie Smith led off the seventh with a single and scored on Jones' homer for SSU.
Savannah State had four hits in the game, made one error and left three runners on base.
Dickerson was tagged with the loss as she gave up 10 hits and two walks.
Tyra Bowers scored twice for FAMU while Brandice Boatwright earned the win with five strikeouts.
The Rattlers (14-22, 5-0 MEAC) left seven runners on base.
