SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State split a non-conference double-header with College of Charleston at Lady Tiger Field.
SSU bounced back from a 5-2 loss in the first game to take a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.
In the win, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Jenna Helberg's two-run triple but Savannah State rallied back to tie the score when
Cortni Jones blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence.
SSU (5-18) extended their lead to 5-2 with three runs in the fourth inning as
Stacie Smith singled and scored on a wild pitch, Jones reached base on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by
Peyton Mitchell and Mitchell scored on a double by
Amaiya Green.
The College of Charleston had the bases loaded in the fifth but would only be able to score one run.
In the bottom of the sixth SSU had the bases loaded with Jones drawing a walk and Mitchell and
Jakayla Sullivan hitting singles. Jones came home on a walk by Green to give Savannah State a 6-3 lead.
Jones and Green each had two RBI in the game. Jones scored three times while Smith crossed home plate twice. Mitchell added a pair of hits.
Tanisha Williams took the win on the mound, striking out three while giving up five hits, three runs and five walks in seven innings.
As a team, SSU had seven hits and left four runners on base.
Helberg had two hits and three RBI for the Cougars while Izzy Berouty took the loss, giving up four hits and five runs in 3.1 innings.
The Cougars (16-16) stranded eight runners on base and made one error.
In the first game, Savannah State made three errors, left eight runners on base and were held to five hits.
Trailing 2-0 after two innings of play, SSU sliced their deficit to 2-1 in the third when
Stephanie Vargas walked and scored on a single by Smith.
College of Charleston added a run in the fourth and two more in the top of the seventh for a 5-1 advantage.
The Lady Tigers had three hits in the bottom of the seventh but could only score once. Destiny Beckhman reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Smith.
Smith had three hits and two RBI for SSU while
Faith Dickerson was tagged with the loss. Dickerson went seven innings and surrendered nine hits, five runs and three walks while striking out three.
Brittany Vicary had three hits for the Cougars. Chandler Sparkman earned the win and Summer Jenkins got the save. Sparkman pitched four innings and struck out five while giving up five walks, one hit and one run while Jenkins pitched three innings and gave up four hits and one run.
