Gillis Scores 26 in Loss to Howard

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Le'Andrea Gillis scored a career-high 26 points for Savannah State in the Lady Tigers 106-70 loss to Howard in a game played at Tiger Arena.

It was the final regular season home game for SSU for the 2018-19 season.


The 5-foot-10 freshman from Adrian, Georgia also had career-highs in made field goals in a game (9), rebounds (8), assists (5), blocks (2) and made 3-pointers in a game (7).

Gillis scored the first 12 points of the game for the Lady Tigers as Howard jumped out to a 14-12 advantage with 4:25 left in the first quarter. The Bison finished the quarter with a 13-3 run for a 27-15 lead as they scored 10 points off six SSU turnovers.

Howard outscored Savannah State 20-4 to start the second quarter to go ahead by 28 with just under four minutes remaining before intermission.

The Bison lead swelled to 54-24 at the 1:58 mark and Howard took a 57-29 advantage into the half.

SSU (6-18, 4-11 MEAC) was outscored 26-13 in the third quarter and went into the final quarter trailing 83-42.


Savannah State, who outscored HU 28-23 in the fourth quarter, found themselves down 98-54 with 4:36 left but used a 16-2 run to slice their deficit to 100-70 with 59 seconds left.

This was the second time this season SSU gave up 100 points in a game.

The 70 points scored by the Lady Tigers were the most since scoring 76 points in a win over Coppin State on January 5, 2019.

Myasia Jones added 17 points, six rebounds and four assists for SSU while Robbi Allen came off the bench to contribute 10 points. Alexxus Sowell had 13 rebounds.


Savannah State shot 28 percent from the field, 31.4 percent from beyond the arc and 61.9 percent from the free throw line.

All five Howard starters finished in double figures with Jayla Thorton leading the way with 33 points.

The Bison (17-11, 10-5 MEAC) ended the game shooting 46 percent from the field, 48.1 percent from beyond the arc while making 59.1 percent of their free throws.

Howard out-rebounded Savannah State 61 to 53.
