Lady Tigers earn first SIAC victory, edging by Central State 69-65

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's basketball battled to the very end of a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) on Monday, sealing up a close 69-65 win over the Central State Marauders in the final minutes of the game.

The Lady Tigers improved to 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in SIAC play. They head out on the road for a two-game SIAC run before returning home on Dec. 19 to face SIAC foe Spring Hill College in Tiger Arena.

After trailing through the first two quarters, the Lady Tigers put on the jets in the third, outscoring Central State 18-6 to take a 54-44 lead into the final period.  But the Marauders weren't finished. They outscored SSU 21-15 in the fourth to cut into the Lady Tigers big lead.

With 59 seconds to play, Brooke Spaulding drained two good free-throws to lift Central State to a 65-64 lead after the visitors trailed for all of the third and fourth periods.

On their next possession, Azhana Maxwell drained a clutch bucket in the paint to lift SSU back into the lead with 57 seconds to play. Central State took a wild chance on a 3-pointer on their following possession as the clocked ticked away.

Maxwell tossed a long ball down court and hit freshman Amari Heard who finished a simple layout, putting SSU up 68-65 with 28 seconds to play. Central State missed yet another 3-point attempt. Joan Messina was fouled with 3 seconds to play and hit one of two free-throw attempts for the final score.

Sophomore Le'Andrea Gillis again led the Lady Tigers on offense with a game-high 21 points. Maxwell had 17 on the night and newcomer Ta'Kyla Austin added 14 for SSU. Bri'elle Johnson and Spaulding led the Marauders with 16 points each. SSU shot 45.8% from the field and 62.5% from the free-throw line. Central State shot 33.3% from the field.

Four Lady Tigers are averaging double figures in each outing this year. Gillis leads SSU this season, averaging 21 points a game followed by Austin (16.8), Maxwell (14.2) and Heard (10.8). Heard is also averaging 10.4 rebounds a game and has recorded three double-doubles so far this season.
