Allen’s Career Day Leads WBB; SSU Falls to Delaware State Saturday

DOVER, Del. – After setting career highs on Monday's game, junior forward Kaylee Allen set a new career-high with 30 points and with 15 rebounds as Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-17, 0-8 MEAC) fell to Delaware State University (4-17, 3-5 MEAC) 93-79 in Memorial Hall Saturday.
 
In the last two games, the Cincinnati, Ohio native is averaging 27.0 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game.  Freshman guard Jazmine Bartlett added 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while freshman forward Jalea Gray added eight points on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor.
 
Freshman center Alexxus Sowell added eight rebounds, five points and five blocks, while junior guard Jacqueline Anderson added a career-high eight rebounds and added five points with two assists.  Freshman forward Kayla Vance added seven rebounds and six points on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor.
 
Delaware State scored the first six points of the game to take a 6-0 lead with 9:13 remaining in the first quarter, but Savannah State scored the next five points to close within a point, 6-5, with 7:42 left.  The Hornets scored the next 10 points to increase their lead to 11 points, 16-5, with 5:41 remaining, but the Lady Tigers scored 11 of the next 18 points to close within seven points, 23-16, with 10 seconds left.  A DSU bucket with two seconds gave the Hornets a nine-point, 25-16, first quarter lead.
 
Savannah State scored seven of the first nine points to close within four points, 27-23, with 8:11 remaining in the second quarter, but Delaware State scored the next five points to increase the lead to nine points, 32-23, with 7:30 left.  The Lady Tigers scored the next four points to cut the lead to five points, 32-27, with 6:29 remaining, but the Hornets scored 24 of the next 33 points to take a 20-point lead, 56-36, halftime lead.
 
The Lady Tigers scored the first four points of the third quarter to cut the lead to 16 points, 56-40, with 8:30 remaining in the quarter, but Delaware State scored 14 of the next 23 points to increase its lead to 70-49 with 1:55 left.  Savannah State scored the final eight points of the quarter to cut the lead 13 points, 70-57, after the third quarter.
 
Delaware State scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter to increase its lead to 27 points, 84-57, with 7:01 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored 22 of the final 31 points to cut the final deficit to 14 points.
 
The Hornets are led by Keke Barber with 34 points, NaJai Pollard with 25 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double and Lanayjha Ashe with 15 points and eight rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers finish the two game roadstand with a trip to Tallahassee, Fla., to face Florida A&M University Wednesday at 6 p.m.
