MACON, Ga. – The Savannah State University (0-13) dropped both games Saturday on day one of the Black and Orange Classic with losses to Marist College (4-3) 10-0 in five innings and to host Mercer University (7-6) 8-1 at Sikes Field.
Senior right fielder
Alexis Singleton batted .333 (2-for-6) with a run scored in both games, while sophomore first baseman
Elizabeth Humes, freshman second baseman
Alysha Bolling and senior left fielder
Chasney Jenkins each batted .250 (1-for-4).
Marist 10, Savannah State 0 (5)
Singleton, Humes and junior pitcher Chelsea Malcolm each added a hit, while sophomore starting pitcher
Faith Dickerson (0-7) took the loss pitching the first 2.1 innings, giving up five earned runs on four hits.
Marist scored five runs in the top of the first inning after a two-run double, and a three-run home run to left field to take a 5-0 lead and added another run in the second inning after a sacrifice fly to take a 6-0 lead.
The Red Foxes added two more runs in the third inning after a two-run single up the middle to take an 8-0 lead and scored the two final runs in the fifth inning after two RBI singles.
Marist was led by Casey Page going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Miranda Perez went 2-for-2 with a run scored and Ali Milam went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Jessica Van Alphen (2-1) pitched a complete game giving up three hits.
Mercer 8, Savannah State 1
Singleton, Bolling and Jenkins each recorded a hit, while Singleton scored the only run and Humes recorded the only RBI. Senior pitcher
Amanda McDowell (0-6) picked up the loss pitching the first 3.2 innings giving up four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the first inning after a sacrifice fly from Humes to score Singleton, who started the game with a single to center field to take a 1-0 lead.
Mercer bounced back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs after two fielding errors to score two runners to take a 2-1 lead and added another run in the bottom of the third inning after a solo home run to left field to take a 3-1 lead.
The Bears scored three runs in the fourth inning after an RBI triple and a two-run home run to center field to take a 6-1 lead and added the final two runs in the sixth inning after a two-run home run to right center field.
Mercer was led by Meghan Rud going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Megan Lane went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Stella Preston pitched a complete game giving up a run on three hits.
The Lady Tigers finish the tournament Sunday with two games against Marist at 12:15 p.m. and Mercer at 4:45 p.m.
