WBB Completes Comeback to Defeat Georgia Southern 71-67

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-4) trailed by as much as 12 points came back to defeated Georgia Southern University (3-4) 71-67 in Hanner Fieldhouse Wednesday.
 
The Lady Tigers first lead of the game came at the end of the third quarter after junior forward Kaylee Allen hit a three-pointer to break up a 43 tie to give SSU a 46-43 lead with 10 seconds left in the quarter.  SSU maintained in the lead throughout the rest of the game and led by as much as nine points, 66-57, with 3:08 left in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles cut the lead to a point, 68-67, with 45 seconds, but three free throws by freshman guard Jazmine Bartlett gave SSU the four-point win.
 
Savannah State was led by Allen and junior guard Donasja Scott with 15 points each and Scott added 11 rebounds for second double-double at SSU and added three blocks while shooting 4-for-6 from the floor.  Allen added four rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
 
Junior guard Jacqueline Anderson scored a career-high 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting, including 3-for-4 from downtown, while Bartlett added 12 points, two assists and two steals while shooting 3-for-6.  Freshman guard Nadia Farmer added nine points, while freshman center Kayla Vance added seven rebounds. 
 
This was the second time that the Lady Tigers defeated Georgia Southern and snapped a two-game losing streak to the Eagles.  The last SSU win was in Savannah, a 77-74 victory in overtime in 2004-05. 
 
The Lady Tigers shot 44.2 (23-for-52) percent from the floor, including 48.0 (12-for-25) percent from downtown, while Georgia Southern shot 32.1 (18-for-56) from the floor, including 30.4 (7-for-23) from the 3-point line.
 
Georgia Southern scored the first eight points of the game to take an 8-0 lead, but Savannah State scored the next five points to cut the lead to three points, 8-5, with 4:26 remaining in the opening quarter.  The Eagles scored 12 of the next 15 points to increase their lead to a game-high 12 points, 20-8, with 1:56 left, but a three-pointer by Farmer cut the lead to nine points, 20-11, with 1:21 left.  A GS layup with 48 seconds gave the Eagles an 11-point lead, 22-11, after the first quarter.
 
A Scott 3-pointer cut the lead to eight points, 22-14, with 9:33 left in the second quarter, but Georgia Southern answered with a three to increase its lead to 11 points, 25-14, with 9:06 remaining.  Savannah State scored 12 of the next 15 points to cut the lead to two points, 28-26, with 2:19 left in the first half, but three GS free throw gave the Eagles a five-point lead, 31-26, at the half.
 
Georgia Southern scored the first five points of the third quarter to increase its lead to 10 points, 36-26, with 8:43 remaining in the quarter, but Savannah State scored 10 of the next 12 points to cut the lead to two points, 38-36, with 5:24 left.  The Eagles scored four of the next six points to increase their lead to four points, 42-38, but the Lady Tigers scored eight of the next nine points to take their first lead of the game, 46-43, after the third quarter.
 
A GS jumper cut the lead to a point, 46-45, with 9:49 remaining in the fourth quarter, but a Bartlett three-pointer increased the SSU lead to four points, 49-45, with 9:32 left.  Georgia Southern scored 10 of the next 17 points to cut the lead to a point, 56-55, with 6:21 remaining in the game, but the Lady Tigers scored 12 of the next 15 points to increase their lead to nine points, 68-59, with 2:05 left.  The Eagles scored the next eight points to cut the lead to a point, 68-67, with 45 seconds left, but three Bartlett's free throws gave SSU the four point win.
 
The Eagles were led by Rhein Beamon with 15 points, Tatum Barber with 13 points, Nakol Franks with 11 points and Hailey Dias-Allen with 10 points and nine rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers continue its six game road trip and starts a three-game stretch against Power Five Conferences with Big Ten opponent University of Wisconsin, Sunday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
