SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior guard
Kenyata Hendrix scored a career-high 27 points as the Savannah State University women's basketball team (5-11, 2-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to Delaware State University (5-12, 2-2 MEAC) to end its season-long five game homestand in Tiger Arena Monday night.
Hendrix shot 9-for-16 from the floor, including shooting 5-for-10 from the 3-point line, and shot 4-for-6 from the free throw line with three rebounds and two assists. The Carrollton, Ga., native has scored 712 career points, which moves her tied for eighth place in school history in the Division I era with Jasmine Kirkland, who played from 2010-14.
Junior guard
Rhianna Warren also scored a career-high with 15 points and tied a career-high with three assists and with three steals, while junior center
Tiyonda Davis led the team with 12 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds, and added five points. Junior forward
Jeremica Edwards added six points and six rebounds.
The Lady Tigers held a plus-11 rebound margin (39-28), while shooting 32.3 (20-for-62) from the floor, including 36.4 (8-for-22) percent from the 3-point line during the game.
The Lady Hornets, who averaged shooting 36.2 percent from the floor, including 23.9 percent from the 3-point line this season, shot 66.7 (18-for-27) percent from the floor, including 71.4 (5-for-7) percent from the 3-point line in the first half, but shot 31.8 (7-for-22) percent from the floor and zero (0-for-2) from the 3-point line in the second half. Overall, DSU finished with 51.0 (25-for-49) percent from the floor, including 55.6 (5-for-9) from the 3-point line.
With the score tied at four with 8:18 remaining in the first quarter, the Lady Hornets scored the next 14 points to lead by 14, 18-4, with 1:41 remaining. The Lady Tigers scored the next five points, to cut the lead to nine, 18-9, with 52 left, but DSU scored the final six points of the quarter to lead by 15, 24-9, after a quarter of play. Hendrix led SSU with six points on 2-for-3 shooting.
An Edwards layup cut DSU's lead to 13, 24-11, with 9:46 remaining in the second quarter, but the Lady Hornets scored the next six points to increase their lead to 17, 30-13, with 7:35 remaining. After a jumper by Edwards, DSU scored the next nine points to increase its lead to 24, 39-15, at the 5:10 mark. The Lady Tigers scored the next three points to cut the lead to 21, 39-18, with 4:40 remaining. With the margin at 21, 44-23, with 2:46 left, the Lady Tigers scored the 11 of the final 16 points to cut the lead to 16, 49-33, at the half. Hendrix led the team with 18 points on 5-for-7 shooting, while Warren added five points in the first half.
The Lady Tigers scored seven of the first 11 points of the third quarter to cut DSU's lead to 13, 53-40, with 7:10 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Hornets scored six of the final 10 points to increase their lead to 15, 59-44, after three quarters of play.
The Lady Tigers opened the final quarter on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 10 points, 59-49, with 7:34 remaining in the quarter, but DSU scored the four of the next six points to increase its lead to 13 points, 63-50, with 5:31 left. The Lady Tigers scored the next six points to cut the lead to seven points, 63-56, at the 1:45 mark, but the Lady Hornets made two free throws to push their lead to nine points, 65-56, with 11 seconds left. A Warren 3-pointer with two seconds left cut the lead to six, 66-59, but DSU made two free throws for the final margin of eight points.
The Lady Hornets had four players to score more than two points and five players score overall. Mikah Aldridge led DSU with 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting with three assists and four steals, while Amber Bogard added 21 points on 7-for-13 shooting with three blocks and four rebounds. NaJai Pollard led the team with seven rebounds and added 10 points.
The Lady Tigers travel to Hampton, Va., to face Hampton University (6-12, 4-1 MEAC) on Saturday at 4 p.m. to start a four-game roadstand.
