Softball Cruises Past Howard In Game One Of MEAC Championship

Box Score

ORMOND BEACH, Fla., May 7, 2015 – Number one Savannah State softball opened the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship Tournament with a 10-1 run-rule, five inning victory over number four Howard University.

The Lady Tigers - who earned their MEAC Southern Division number one seed with a 13-1 conference record - will play the winner of game three between Norfolk State (N2) and Florida A&M (S3) at 7 p.m. Thursday night.

After two scoreless innings that saw both teams go hitless, SSU broke the stalemate with a massive third inning.

Freshman Brianna Harris singled to left, scoring Molly Lillis and Antonette Smith; both reached on singles. Amanda Hallman doubled to left-center, scoring Harris. Amber Hallman later platted Ama. Hallman on a single up the middle.

Later in the inning. Kylie Tierce singled to left, scoring both Amb. Hallman and MEAC Player of the Year Torrian Wright. Alexis Singleton scored Smith and Tierce on a single to right. All told, SSU racked up nine runs on seven hits, stranding only a single runner in the inning.

Ama. Hallman, in her first game back after suffering a concussion in the regular season series with North Carolina Center, pitched a stellar 5.0 innings.

The younger Hallman sister looked to be earning her first shutout of the season into the fifth inning. Jasmine Gammons ended her hopes with a solo home run over the left field fence for the Lady Bison's only run of the game.

Ama. Hallman improved to 7-7 on the season with a 1.40 ERA on the day, allowing one earned run on only two hits with seven strikeouts. Janessa Flynn took the loss after 2.1 innings of work. She allowed six earned runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Savannah State improves to 21-15 on the season. The Lady Tigers are on a program-high 14-game winning streak. Howard falls to 14-28 overall and will resume play in the consolation bracket of the tournament.

In pregame ceremonies, Torrian Wright was honored for being named MEAC Player of the Year and All-MEAC First Team. Amber Hallman was honored for making the All-MEAC First Team, and eighth year head coach Jose Gonzalez was honored for being named MEAC Coach of the Year.
