SSU Holds Blue and Orange Scrimmage

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State football team held their second scrimmage of the preseason at Memorial Stadium in Savannah. SSU scrimmage took 90 minutes as the Tigers ran 69 plays.

Senior kicker/punter Derek Williams impressed the fans with three field goals and two extra points. Williams kicked field goals of 47, 42 and 54 yards.

Freshmen Desmond Gannt and Chris Strong also scored touchdowns for the SSU offense. Gantt, a 6'6” tight end scored on a 20-yard pass from quarterback AJ Defilippis while Strong, a running back, scored on a five-yard run.

The SSU offense had 375 total yards with 226 coming through the air and 149 on the ground.

Defilippis completed 18 of 30 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown while freshman Victor Hardison completed 2 of 5 passes for 16 yards. Antonio Bostick threw one incomplete pass before leaving the scrimmage with a injury.

Strong led all runners with 75 yards on six carries and a touchdown. Justin Babb added 52 yards on six carries. Wide receiver Brian Lackey took an end around for 33 yards and Aaron Casper ran seven times for 24 yards.

Eleven different players caught passes on the afternoon and were led by Dylan Cook who hauled in four passes for 38 yards while Alakan Thomas caught three passes for 59 yards. Strong (22 yds), Lackey (21 yds), Gantt (21 yds) and Simon Heyward (17 yds) all had two catches. Getting one reception each were Babb (15 yds), Vaughn Cornelia (9 yds), Kris Drummond (9 yds), Sheldon Barnes (8 yds) and AJ Welch (7 yds).

Rich Rucker paced the defense with a team-high six tackles. Antonio Martin, Sadrak Jean-Baptise and Nate Clay all had five stops. Jean-Baptise, Leroy Cummings, Travis Alston, Denzell Carter, and Reggie Givens all had a sack for the defense. Alston and Tim Wright each forced fumbles and Ed Baety broke up a pair of passes.
