CANTON, Oh.- Savannah State alumnus Shannon Sharpe was one of seven inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 7.
A native of Glennville, Georgia, Sharpe played for Savannah State from 1986-89.
Sharpe was a three-time All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) player from 1987 to 1989 and the SIAC Player of the Year in 1987. He was also named a Kodak Division II All-American in 1989.
Sharpe was drafted in the 7th round of the 1990 NFL Draft, 192nd overall by the Denver Broncos.
Sharpe stayed in the NFL for 14 years, 12 with Denver and two with the Baltimore Ravens and won three Super Bowls. He finished his 14 year career with 815 receptions for 10,060 yards and 62 touchdowns in 204 games.
Among those witnessing Sharpe's enshrinement into the Hall of Fame were former SSU teammates Richard Basil, Earl Bryant, Edwin Ford, Dwayne Ruff and Daryl McCormick. Also on hand was his high school coach William Hall, a Savannah State graduate.
