SAVANNAH, Ga.- Student-athletes on Savannah State's intercollegiate athletics programs joined coaches, administrators, boosters and family at Tiger Arena to celebrate the 2010-11 athletic season at the annual SSU Sports Banquet.
Put together by the Student Athletes Advisory Council, the evening was tabbed “The Tiger Espys MVP Awards”.
Mistresses of ceremonies for the event were Amara Jones (cross-country/track & field) and Keandra Lewis (volleyball).
After dinner, the head coaches passed out most valuable player awards to student-athletes for their sport.
Earning MVP awards were: Kaneisha Hamilton (women's volleyball), Sandra Kirstjansdottir (women's tennis), Madison Hedderly (softball), Ilene Martin (cheerleading), Aleah Hordges (women's cross country), Ruben Isreal-McBee (men's cross country), Amara Jones (sprinter-women's track), Eric Plump (sprinter-men's track), Sharonda Redfield and Amber Hughes (field events-women's track), Shawn Sovenir (field events-men's track), Dominique Givance (distance-women's track), Tyrone McCoy (distance-men's track), Ezinne Kalu (women's basketball), Jovonni Shuler (men's basketball), Joseph McCrary III (baseball), Sheldon Barnes (offense-football) and Vince Cochran (defense-football).
Amara Jones and Julius Green were presented the W.W. Law Scholarship Award.
Academic awards were given to those with 3.0 or better grade point averages and several student-athletes were inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma athletic honor society.
Before the closing remarks, the student-athletes made two special presentations. University president Dr. earl Yarbrough was given a framed jersey with his name on it and athletics director Marilynn Suggs was given a letterman jacket with her name on the back.
