SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State women's basketball team stopped their three-game losing streak with a 41-36 win over Louisiana Lafayette at Tiger Arena.
SSU scored the first six points of the contest and led 10-3 after a layup by
Smiljana Cuk with 12:46 on the clock.
The Rajin Cajuns rallied back eight straight points as part of a 13-2 run to take a 16-12 lead with 3:52 remaining.
Savannah State tied the score at 16 with 2:53 left but ULL scored the final six points of the half to take a 22-16 lead into the break.
The visitors ran their lead to eight early in the second period but SSU cut their deficit to 26-25 after a layup by
Ezinne Kalu with 12:46 on the clock.
Down 31-17 with just under eight minutes left, the Lady Tigers went on a 10-0 run to take a 37-31 lead with 5:02 remaining.
Lafayette closed to within 37-36 with 3:35 left but SSU finished the game with a jumper from Uba Blessing with 2:23 left and two free throws by
Fila Smith with two seconds on the clock.
The win gives SSU a 5-5 mark while The Cajuns fall to 4-5.
Kalu led SSU with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Alisha Smith added 8 rebounds while Blessing, Kirkland, Cuk and Smith all chipped in 8 points.
Lafayette was led by Michelle Brunker who had 7 points.
The Lady Tigers shot 29.6 percent from the floor while Lafayette shot 28.8 percent.
SSU won the rebounding battle 43 to 34 and made all eight of their free throw attempts.
