SSU Grad Sharpe Inducted Into Georgia Sports Hall of Fame

MACON, Ga.- The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame held their induction ceremony for the class of 2009 at the historic Macon City Auditorium on Saturday, February 28, 2009.

Savannah State University graduate Shannon Sharpe was among those inducted.

Other inductees include: Milton Byard, Hugh Durham, Terry Hoage, Andy Landers, Mills Lane, Jeff Malone, George Rose, and Roman Turman.

Sharpe, 40, was born in Chicago, Illinois but grew up in Glennville, GA and was a star football player for the Tigers where he was a three-time All-American and three-time Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Sharpe, who earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in the spring of 1991, owns SSU single season receiving records for yardage (1,312), touchdowns (18) and yards per catch (21.5).

In the NFL, Sharpe revolutionized the tight end position and continues to be the NFL's career yardage and touchdown leader among tight ends. Sharpe played 14 seasons in the NFL and was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection. He won three Super Bowl rings during his NFL career - two with the Denver Broncos and one with the Baltimore Ravens.

Since 2004, Sharpe has been analyst on "The NFL Today" show on CBS.
