SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State had their four game winning streak come to an end with a 49-35 loss to Coastal Carolina in Tiger Arena.
SSU shot 31.7 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from the free throw line.
The loss gives the Lady Tigers a 6-3 record while Coastal Carolina improved to 6-2.
It took Coastal nearly five minutes to score their first points as SSU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Chants answered with a 14-2 run to go ahead by eight with 8:23 on the clock.
A pair of jumpers by
Mattisha Mangum pulled SSU with four but Coastal finished the half with a 10-2 spurt and took a 24-12 lead into the locker room.
Coastal expanded their lead to 18 (32-14) nearly five minutes into the second period.
Savannah State was able to pull within 39-26 with 8:29 remaining when
Crissa Jackson and
Carlita Johnson made back-to-back layups.
Coastal responded with six unanswered points for their biggest lead of the night at 45-26 with 4:20 left.
Despite holding Coastal to just one field goal the final six minutes SSU could not get any closer than 14 the rest of the way as
Brittany Gilbert made a free throw, jumper and a layup.
Jackson led SSU with eight points while Gilbert added seven and Mangum chipped in six.
Raven James had seven rebounds.
Sydnei Moss led the Chants with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
