Box Score 2 SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State opened their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference part of the season by hosting Florida A&M in a double-header at Tiger Field.
SSU won the opener 16-15 but lost the second game 13-5.
In the first game, the Tigers scored three times in the bottom of the first inning as
Mason Calloway,
Kyle Gerdts and Bryce Luke crossed home plate.
The Rattlers answered with five runs in the top of the second and added three more in the fourth for a 8-3 lead.
Savannah State sent eight runners across home plate in the fifth to go ahead 11-8. The highlight of the inning was a grand slam by first baseman
Marcus Mitchell.
In the bottom of the sixth, Luke,
Jalen Atterbury and Larry Silmon all scored to increase the Tigers lead to 14-8.
The top of the seventh and eighth innings saw FAMU score one and three runs respectively to trim the Savannah State lead to 14-12.
Silmon scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth and
Freddie Landers hit a RBI single that allowed
Turner Davis to score to give SSU a 16-12 lead.
Florida A&M had four hits in the top of the ninth and scored three times but it would not be enough.
Trevor McKenna earned the win on the mound for Savannah State. McKenna started and went 6.2 innings before giving way to relievers
Ian Concevitch and Paul Sheffield. McKenna gave up six hits, nine runs and four walks while striking out seven. Concevitch and Sheffield both gave up three runs.
Gerdts, Luke, Landers, Atterbury and
Khalyd Cox all had three hits for the Tigers. Mitchell drove in four runs, Landers drove in three runs while Luke and Silmon both scored three times.
SSU collected 19 hits, made four errors and left eight runners on base.
Thomas Nicoll was tagged with the loss. Nicoll pitched four innings and gave up 12 hits and nine runs while recording six strikeouts.
Jacky Miles led FAMU at the plate with four hits, three runs and two RBI.
Florida A&M had 13 hits, made three errors and left ten men on base.
In the second game, the Rattlers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. Atterbury and Cox scored runs for SSU in the second inning to cut their deficit to 7-2.
Dallas Oliver hit a three run double for FAMU in the third as the Rattlers scored four times to increase their lead to 11-2.
Savannah State got one run back in the bottom half of the inning. Gerdts led off with a walk and scored on a double by Luke to make the score 11-3.
Oliver scored a run for the Rattlers in the fifth inning and hit a RBI single in the sixth to extend FAMU's lead to 13-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, Daryl Harper and Gerdts drew walks and scored runs for the Tigers. Harper scored on a wild pitch while Gerdts scored following a single by Atterbury.
The Tigers (4-11, 1-1 MEAC) used five pitchers in the contest. Starter
Alex Wright lasted just one third of a inning and was tagged with giving up six hits and seven runs.
Davis had two hits for SSU. The Tigers completed the game with six hits and one error while leaving ten men on base.
FAMU (10-13, 3-2 MEAC) also made one error and left ten men on base while collecting 11 hits.
Pedro de los Rios earned the win. de los Rios pitched three innings in relief, surrendering two hits, two runs, five walk while striking out five.
Oliver went 3 for 3 at the pate with seven RBI and three runs scored.
