SAVANNAH, Ga.- Charleston Southern scored two runs in the top of the 12th and held on to defeat Savannah State 7-5, in a game played at Tiger Field.
Christian Maggio tripled to right field and scored on a triple by Josh Asbill to break a 5-5 tie. Asbill came home on a double by Alex Andronica to give the Bucaneers a 7-5 advantage.
In the bottom half of the inning, Bryce Luke drew a walk but
Larry Silmon, Garret Bogart and
Kyle Gerdts all struck out for the Tigers.
The Tigers (2-2) collected 15 hits on the day but made three errors and left 12 runners on base.
Savannah State was paced by
Freddie Landers who had four hits, including a solo home run.
Mason Calloway had three hits while
Turner Davis,
Marcus Mitchell and
Noah Orlando added two hits apiece,
CSU scored twice in the third inning to take an early lead but Savannah State got on board in the bottom of the fifth when Calloway led off with a single and scored on a ground-out by
Daryl Harper.
Maggio hit a two-run double for the Buccaneers in the top of the sixth to help them increase their lead to 5-1.
The Tigers scored once in the sixth and seventh innings and twice in the eighth to tie the game.
Davis doubled in the sixth and scored on a single by Mitchell. Landers hit a home run over the left field fence in the seventh and
Jalen Atterbury hit a two-run double in the eighth that allowed Mitchell and Orlando to score.
SSU used nine pitchers in the game.
David Sharp was tagged with the loss, giving up three hits and two runs in the 12th.
Jason Miller had three hits for Charleston Southern (2-2) while Maggio had two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs.
Cody Maw was the game winner. Maw worked from the pitcher's mound for two innings and gave up one hit and one walk while striking out three.
CSU had ten hits but stranded 14 runners on base.
