SAVANNAH, Ga.-
Trevor McKenna pitched six scoreless innings and struck out seven batters to lead Savannah State to a 2-0 opening day win over visiting Delaware State, in the first game of a double-header, in a game played at Tiger Field.
The Tigers lost the second game 9-3.
SSU scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bryce Harper was hit by a pitch and came home on a two-run home run by
Daryl Harper.
Larry Silmon hit a double for Savannah State while
Jalen Atterbury and
Kyle Gerdts each added a single.
Lane DeLeon took the loss for the Hornets. DeLeon pitched five innings and gave up four hits, two runs and one walk while striking out four.
In the second game, Harper doubled and
Khalyd Cox hit a solo home run but it would not be enough.
DSU scored twice in the first inning and added two more runs in the fourth for a 4-0 lead.
Cox's homer in the bottom of the fifth got the Tigers (1-1) on the board.
Delaware State answered with three runs off two hits in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 7-1 but SSU scored twice in the bottom of the inning to make the score 7-3 as
Turner Davis hit a RBI single and
Noah Orlando drove in a run when he hit into a double play.
The Hornets (1-1) left the bases loaded in the seventh but not before they scored twice.
Gerdts, Turner and
Mason Calloway each had two hits for the Tigers.
Alex Wright started on the mound for SSU and took the loss. Wright went three innings and surrendered four hits, four runs and three walks while striking out five.
Tyler Robinson,
Ian Concevitch,
David Sharp,
Spencer Gillis and
Shawn Sausville all saw action in relief for Savannah State.
Darnell Maisonet had a home run and a triple for Delaware State, driving in two runs and scoring once. Sean McGrath did not give up a run and struck out four in his four inning on the mound. McGrath gave up five hits.
