GREENSBORO, N.C. – Savannah State University men's and women's track and field teams recorded 21 top-10 finishes, including winning the men's triple jump at the UNCG Early Bird Meet.
On the men's field team, senior
Donterious Copeland won the triple jump with a distance of 15.34 meters (50-4), while junior
Malik Franklin finished second with a jump of 14.05 meters (46-1.25). Franklin finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 6.85 meters (22-5.75), while Copeland finished sixth with a jump of 6.72 meters (22-0.75).
On the men's track team, freshman Terrence Sessons nearly set a school-record in the one-mile run with a time of 4:26.82 to finish fourth in the event. The school record is 4:26.81 set in 2005 by Robert Herbert. Sophomore Abbas Abbkar finished seventh with a time of 4:30.86 and sophomore Cameron Pack finished 10
th with a time of 4:37.41.
The men's track team recorded four additional top-10 finishes. Freshman Carlous Bartee finished ninth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.10 and finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.73, while sophomore Atakilti Sahlu finished eighth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:22.78, followed by freshman Suhieb Mohamed with a ninth place finish with a time of 9:23.37. The women's track team recorded three top-10 finishes. Sophomore Iycis Hammock finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.01, followed by freshman Carlandra Jones with an eight place finish with a time of 1:00.26. Savannah State's 4x400-meter relay team of junior
Tyneshia Quarterman, freshman Ashley Devert, Hammock and sophomore Cayla William finished seventh with a time of 4:24.70.
The women's field team recorded six additional top-10 finishes. Freshman Oneillia Fuller finished fifth in the high jump with a distance of 1.50 meters (4-11), followed by freshman Essence Randolph's ninth place finish with a jump of 1.50 meters (4-11). Senior
Kourtney Sizemore finished sixth in the pole vault with a sixth place finish with a distance of 2.75 meters (9-0.25), while freshman Jaylen Sewell finished eighth in the long jump with a distance of 5.21 meters (17-1.25) and Devert finished sixth in the triple jump with a jump of 10.94 meters (35-10.75).
Other men's track results include Ellis-Foster's 13
th finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.84, while senior
Randolph Barratt finished 13
th in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:12.55, followed by junior Markendy Pierre's 16
th place finish with a time of 2:16.21. Houser-Cross finished 16
th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.41, while freshman Ermias Tewolde finished 11
th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:32.94.
Other women's track results include freshman Autumn Brown's 15
th place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.13, while Quarterman finished 13
th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.88, followed by sophomore Danielle Derricho's 16
th place finish with a time of 1:05.76.
Other women's field results include sophomore Bryshea Jackson's 12
th place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.12 meters (16-9.75), followed by Ashley Devert's 17
th place finish with a jump of 4.88 meters (16-0.25) and senior
Miara Elmore's 24
th place finish with a jump of 3.90 meters (12-9.5).
The men's team won all three dual meets defeating Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent North Carolina Central University 49-43, University of North Carolina at Greensboro 49-27 and Furman University 49-26, while the women's team also won all three dual meets defeating Furman 33-28, Campbell University 31-22 and UNCG 32-31.
The men's and women's track and field teams return to action Jan. 12 for the Blazer Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
