JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-9) fell to Jacksonville University (10-5) 74-46 Sunday in Swisher Gymnasium.
Junior forward Kaylee Allen led the Lady Tigers with 12 points and added two rebounds and two steals, while freshman forward Jalea Gray added eight points on 3-for-4 shooting with four rebounds. Freshman center Alexxus Sowell added six points on 3-for-5 shooting with four blocks and freshman guard Jazmine Barlett added seven points and three assists.
Both teams came out cold as the first basket was scored at the 7:46 mark, a Sowell layup to give the Lady Tigers and early 2-0 lead. Jacksonville came back scoring eight of the next 13 points to take a point lead, 8-7, with 3:39 left in the first quarter, but another Sowell layup gave Savannah State a point lead, 9-8. A three-point basket by JU before the buzzer gave the Dolphins a three-point lead, 12-9, after the first quarter.
Jacksonville scored five of the first seven points to increase the lead to six points, 17-11, with 7:20 remaining in the second quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next five points to cut the lead to a point, 17-16, with 5:04 left. JU outscored SSU 14-5 during the rest of the quarter to take a 10-point, 31-21, halftime lead.
The Dolphins scored 23 of the first 29 points of the third quarter to increase their lead to 27 points, 54-27, with 2:59 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored five of the next six points to cut the lead to 23 points, 55-32 with 1:11 left. JU scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 27-point, 59-32, lead after the third quarter.
Jacksonville scored 15 of the first 24 points of the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 33 points, 74-41, with 4:23 remaining in the game, but the Lady Tigers finished the game scoring the final five points to cut the lead to the final deficit of 28 points.
The Dolphins were led by Jasmyn Brown with 18 points and six rebounds, while Brandi Buie added 15 points and Shakayla Nevitt had 13 points and five rebounds.
The Lady Tigers return home to face Kennesaw State University Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena before starting the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule later in the week.
