SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior guard Donasja Scott led all scorers with 19 points and led with 16 rebounds for her first double-double as a Lady Tiger as Savannah State University (1-0) defeated LaGrange College (0-1) 86-44 Friday night in Tiger Arena for the season and home opener.
Scott also recorded three steals in 28 minutes, while junior forward Kaylee Allen added 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals and freshman guard Heniaya Moton and freshman guard Nadia Farmer each recorded nine points and three rebounds each.
Freshman center Alexxus Sowell added nine rebounds, eight points and two blocks, while freshman forward Jalea Gray added seven points, four rebounds and three steals.
Savannah State shot 41.5 (34-for-82) percent from the floor, while LaGrange shot 33.3 (18-for-54) percent from the floor. The Lady Tigers outrebound LC 58-31 and recorded 18 steals compared to four for Panthers.
Savannah State scored the first seven points of the game to take a seven-point, 7-0, with 8:07 remaining in the first quarter, but two free throws cut the lead to five points, 7-2, with 7:09 left. The Lady Tigers scored the next four points to increase the lead to nine points, 11-2, with 6:46 remaining, but the Panthers scored the next six points to cut the lead to three points, 11-8. Savannah State scored nine of the final 12 points to take a nine-point lead, 20-11, after the first quarter.
The Lady Tigers scored the first six points of the second quarter to a 15-point lead, 26-11, with 8:13 remaining in the second quarter, but LaGrange scored eight of the next 14 points to cut the lead to 13 points, 32-19, with 4:49 left in the first half. Savannah State scored the next 13 points to increase the lead to 26 points, 45-19, with 33 seconds, but a Panther jumper with 16 seconds cut the halftime lead to 24 points, 45-21.
Savannah State dominated the third quarter outscoring LaGrange 18-4 to increase its lead to 38 points, 63-25 after three quarters.
The Lady Tigers scored 19 of the next 26 points to increase their lead to a game-high 50 points, 82-32, with 2:56 remaining in the game, but LaGrange scored 12 of the final 16 points to cut the lead to the final deficit of 42 points.
The Panthers were led by Riley Chlupacek with 11 points, Marilauren Farr, Jaelynn James and Lauren Johnson with nine points each, while Farr added eight rebounds and Johnson added five assists.
The Lady Tigers head to Montgomery, Ala., for the first road game of the season to face the Southwestern Athletic Conference Defending Champion Alabama State University Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
