Box Score MACON, Ga. – Freshman setter
Salma Gonzalez recorded four kills, seven assists, seven digs and two service aces and a .400 hitting percentage for the Savannah State University women's volleyball team as the Lady Tigers (2-15) fell to Mercer University (7-9) 3-0 (18-25, 10-25, 16-25) in a nonconference battle in Hawkins Arena Wednesday.
Junior outside hitter
Jennifer Rosado led the team with five kills, while senior setter
Alee Quint led the team with 12 assists and freshman libero
Leiri Melendez led the team with 12 digs.
Freshman middle blocker
Tyran Chenault added four kills, while freshman outside hitter
Brooke Sanford added three kills and five digs and junior middle blocker
Charlinda Colbert connected on all three attempts for a perfect hitting percentage.
Savannah State scored seven of the first 11 points in the first set to take a three-point lead, 7-4, but Mercer scored the next six points to take a three-point lead, 10-7. The Bears scored eight of the next 11 points to increase their lead to eight points, 18-10, but the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to cut the lead to four points, 18-14. MU scored four of the next five points to lead by seven points, 22-15, but SSU scored the next three points to cut the lead to four points, 22-18. Mercer scored the final three points to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Lady Tigers scored six of the first 11 points in the second stanza to take a point lead, 6-5, but Mercer scored seven of the next eight points to take a four-point lead, 12-7. MU outscored SSU 13-3 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
Savannah State scored six of the first 11 points in the final frame to take a point lead, 6-5, but the Bears scored the next four points to take a three-point lead, 9-6. The Lady Tigers scored the next two points after back-to-back fills from Rosado and junior outside hitter
Ayree Gallon to cut the lead to a point, 9-8, but Mercer outscored SSU 16-8 during the rest of the set to win the set and to win the match.
The Bears were led by Paige Alsten with 15 kills, Claire Waliczek with 41 assists and Emilee Wissmach with 12 digs.
The Lady Tigers continue the three-match roadstand in North Carolina this weekend to face North Carolina A&T State University (9-9, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Friday at 7 p.m. in Greensboro and North Carolina Central University (0-13, 0-1 MEAC) Sunday at 1 p.m. in Durham.
