Gonzalez Records a Double-Double as Volleyball Falls to Georgia Southern 3-1 Tuesday

Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga.  – Freshman setter Salma Gonzalez was two kills from a triple-double as she finished with eight kills, 13 assists and 11 digs with two blocks as Savannah State University women's volleyball team (2-18) fell to Georgia Southern University (6-11) 3-1 (18-25, 13-25, 25-15, 18-25) Tuesday in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium.
 
This was Gonzalez's second consecutive double-double, while freshman middle blocker Oneillia Fuller led the team with nine kills and senior setter Alee Quint led the team with 22 assists and added seven digs.
 
Freshman middle blocker Tyran Chenault led the team with six blocks, including four solo blocks, and added five kills with a .500 hitting percentage, while freshman outside hitter Amanda Rullan Vilanova added seven kills and nine digs.  Freshman libero Leiri Melendez added seven digs and freshman outside hitter Karissa Tatum added four kills and three digs.
 
Georgia Southern scored six of the first eight points to take a 6-2 lead in the first set, but Savannah State scored seven of the next 12 points to cut the lead to a point, 10-9.  The Eagles scored three of the next four points to increase its lead to three points, 13-10, but the Lady Tigers scored the next two points to cut the lead to a point, 13-12.  GS outscored SSU 12-6 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
 
Savannah State scored eight of the first 12 points to take a four-point lead, 8-4, in the second frame, but the Eagles scored four of the next five points to close within a point, 9-8.  The Lady Tigers scored the next seven points to increase their lead to eight points, 16-8, but the Eagles scored the next two points to cut the lead to six points, 16-10.  SSU outscored GS 9-3 during the rest of the set to win the set and to tie the match at one.
 
The Eagles scored four of the first six points of the third stanza to take a two-point lead, 4-2, but Savannah State scored the next three points to take a point lead, 5-4.  Georgia Southern scored six of the next nine points to take a two-point lead, 10-8, but the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to take a two-point lead, 12-10.  GS outscored SSU 13-5 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-1 match lead.
 
Georgia Southern scored six of the first seven points in the final set to take a five-point lead, 6-1, but Savannah State scored seven of the next eight points to take a point lead, 8-7.  The Eagles scored 12 of the next 17 points to take an eight-point lead, 20-12, but Savannah State scored the next three points to close the gap to five points, 20-15.  GS outscored SSU 5-3 during the rest of the set to win the set and to win the match.
 
The Eagles were led by Cathrine Murray with 17 kills and added 13 digs for a double-double, Landon Jones with 34 assists and Joscelin Morrow with 14 digs.
 
The Lady Tigers continue Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with South Carolina State University Friday at 7 p.m. in Orangeburg, S.C.
