Kenyata Hendrix recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard
Rhianna Warren led the Savannah State University women's basketball team with 16 points as the Lady Tigers (4-13, 2-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) defeated South Carolina State University (3-11, 0-3 MEAC) 60-49 for their second consecutive win in S-H-M Memorial Center Monday.
Warren shot 5-for-10 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from the 3-point line, and added two assists, while Hendrix shot 3-for-9 from the floor and added two assists.
Senior forward
Jeremica Edwards added eight rebounds, six points, on 3-for-6 shooting, while
Tiyonda Davis, who was named MEAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, added seven rebounds, seven points, on 3-for-5 shooting, and four blocks. Graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss added eight points and two assists.
South Carolina State scored the first nine points of the first quarter to take a 9-0 lead with 2:46 left in the quarter, but Savannah State scored seven of the next nine points to cut the lead to four points, 11-7, with 30 second left. Two SCSU free throws gave the Lady Bulldogs a six-point lead, 13-7, after the first quarter.
Savannah State scored the first five points of the second quarter to cut the lead to a point, 13-12, with 7:09 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs scored the next four points to increase their lead to five points, 17-12, with 5:56 left. The Lady Tigers closed out the quarter on a 14-0 run to take a nine-point, 26-17, lead into halftime.
The Lady Tigers scored 17 of the next 19 points to take a 24-point lead, 43-19, with 2:54 remaining in the third quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs scored the next four points to cut the lead to 20 points, 43-23, with 1:34 left. Savannah State scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 24-point lead, 47-23, after three quarters.
A SCSU free throw to begin the final quarter cut the lead to 23 points, 47-24, with 9:51 remaining in the four quarter, but a layup by junior guard
Deyja Brown gave the Lady Tigers a game-high 25 point lead, 49-24, with 9:31 remaining in the game. South Carolina State scored 21 of the next 25 points to cut the lead to single digits, eight, 53-45, with 1:52 left, but the Lady Tigers scored seven of the final 11 points to win by the final margin of 11 points.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Bryeasha Blair with 17 points, Brittany Drumgoole with 10 points and seven rebounds and JaQuanna Murray with seven rebounds and six points.
The Lady Tigers return home for a two-game homestand starting with Morgan State University (2-14, 0-3 MEAC) Saturday at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
