BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Savannah State men's track and field teams set two school records at the UAB Vulcan Invite Saturday.
Sophomore
Nigel Brown set the 200-meter school record with a time of 21.64 beating the previous record of 21.82 set by Eric Plump on Feb. 4, 2011, while sophomore
LaRon James set the school record in the long jump with a jump of 7.14 (23-5.25) meters beating his previous record of 7.00 meters set in the UNCG Early Bird 6-Way on Dec. 4, 2016.
Brown finished third in the 200 meters, while James won the long jump event.
The men's track posted nine other top-15 finishes. Brown also finished 13
th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.92, while freshman
Javontee Brice finished 12
th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.74. Freshman
Abbas Abbkar finished fifth in the one-mile run with a time of 4:27.23, followed by freshman
Cameron Pack's 12
th place finish with a time of 4:36.16.
Junior
Michael Smith finished 12
th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:30.88, while sophomore
Morgan Ellis-Foster finished ninth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.52. Savannah State's 4x400-meter relay team of Brown, sophomore
Donterious Copeland, Ellis-Foster and sophomore
Malik Franklin finished seventh with a time of 3:20.49, while Abbkar, senior
Justin Leggett, Brice and Houser-Cross finished 15
th with a time of 3:30.81.
The men's field team recorded three other top-six finishes with Franklin finishing in fifth in the long jump with a distance of 6.95 meters (22-9.75) and third in the triple jump with a jump of 15.10 meters (49-6.5), while Copeland finished sixth with a jump of 14.72 meters (48-3.5).
The women's track team posted two top-12 finishes with sophomore Tyneshia Quarterman's 10
th place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.58, while Savannah State's 4x400-meter relay team of Quarterman, freshman
Jada Morgan, freshman
Bryshea Jackson and freshman
Cayla Williams finished 12
th with a time of 4:07.99.
The women's field team posted three top-16 finishes with junior
Kourtney Sizemore finishing 11
th in the pole vault with a distance of 2.90 meters (9-6.25), while Jackson finished 10
th in the triple jump with a distance of 11.06 meters (36-3.5), followed by junior
Miara Elmore's 16
th finish with a jump of 10.62 meters (34-10.25).
Other men's track results include Leggett's 22
nd place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.07, followed by junior
Robert Simmons' 26
th place finish with a time of 22.77. Simmons also finished 26
th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.77, while Houser-Cross finished 33
rd in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.86.
Junior
Elijah West finished 20
th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.82, followed by sophomore
Markendy Pierre's 24
th place finish with a time of 2:08.75 and Barratt finished 25
th with a time of 2:08.91. Freshman
Isaiah McKisson finished 18
th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.77.
Other women's track results include Quarterman's 26
th place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.70, followed by Williams' 39
th place with a time of 26.27 and
Jada Morgan's 41
st place finish with a time of 26.32. Morgan also finished 37
th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.08, followed by freshman Atahja Williams-Chappel's 39
th place finish with a time of 8.10.
Wyatt finished 31
st in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.56, followed by freshman
Danielle Derricho's 42
nd place finish with a time of 1:05.79. Freshman
Brenda Johnson finished 27
th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.60.
Other women's field results include junior
Ravyn Mike's 20
th place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.00 meters (16-5), followed by Jackson's 22
nd place finish with a jump of 4.80 meters (15-9). Sophomore
Faith Shears finished 28
th in the shot put with a throw of 10.51 meters (34-5.75) and finished 34
th in the weight throw with a distance of 11.46 meters (37-7.25), while
Ariel Holmes finished 36
th in the shot put with a throw of 8.27 meters (27-1.75) and finished 40
th in the weight throw with a distance of 8.00 meters (26-3).
The men's and women's track and field teams are back in action Friday in Lynchburg, Va., for the Liberty Kickoff.
