Hendrix Scores Her 1,000th Point as WBB Falls to No. 6 South Carolina

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Senior guard Kenyata Hendrix became the third Savannah State University women's basketball student-athlete in the Division I era to record her 1,000th career point as the Lady Tigers (2-9) fell to No. 6 University of South Carolina (10-1) 70-30 in Tiger Arena Wednesday. 
 
Hendrix joins Ezinne Kalu (2,045 points) and Jasmine Norman (1,029 points) to be the only three to reach the milestone in the Division I era.  The Carrollton, Ga., native recorded a team-high 15 points with four rebounds.
 
Senior guard Rhianna Warren added five points, while senior center Tiyonda Davis added five rebounds and two points. 
 
South Carolina scored the first seven points to take a 7-0 lead with 8:08 remaining in the first quarter, but a Hendrix three-pointer cut the lead to four points, 7-3, with 6:27 left.  The Gamecocks scored the next 10 points to increase their lead to 14 points, 17-3, with 2:27 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to cut the lead to 10 points, 17-7, with 38 seconds left.  A jumper at the buzzer by USC gave the Gamecocks a 12-point, 19-7, lead after the first quarter.
 
South Carolina scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to increase its lead to 23 points, 30-7, with 5:43 remaining in the quarter, but a jumper by senior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw cut the lead to 21 points, 30-9, with 5:21 left. The Gamecocks scored the next nine points to increase their lead to 30 points, 39-9, with 1:45 remaining in the first half, but a Brown three-pointer cut the lead to 27 points, 39-12, at the half.
 
The Gamecocks scored 10 of the first 12 points in the third quarter to increase their lead to 35 points, 49-14, with 6:26 remaining in the quarter, but two free throws by Hendrix cut the lead to 33 points, 49-16, with 6:09 left.  South Carolina scored 11 of the final 18 points to take a 37-point, 60-23, third quarter lead.
 
A three-pointer by Warren cut the South Carolina lead to 34 points, 60-26, with 8:20 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Gamecocks scored 10 of the final 14 points for the 40-point win.
 
The Gamecocks were led by A'ja Wilson with 18 points, Allisha Gray with 12 points, and Alaina Coates and Doniyah Cliney with seven rebounds each.
 
The Lady Tigers take 10 days off for Christmas before traveling to Ft. Myers, Fla., to face Florida Gulf Coast University Monday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m.
