Lady Tigers Compete in HBCU Championship

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Savannah State women's tennis team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia this week to compete in the 12th annual HBCU Tennis Championship.  Newcomer Andrea Pavlovic won the B Division consolation bracket.

In Friday's action, returning junior Sandra Kristjansdottir defeated Hampton's Renee Henry 8-4 to advance to the final round of the B division consolation bracket. Pavlovic, also in the semifinals of the B Division consolation bracket, was trailing North Carolina A&T's Nianna Henry 6-7. The Belgrade, Serbian native won three straight games, beating Henry 9-7 to advance to the finals. Kristjansdottir conceded to Pavlovic, giving her the B division win.

Earlier on Friday, in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, Pavlovic defeated Hampton's Daneya Charles 8-1, and Kristjansdottir downed Clark-Atlanta's Asia Boyd 8-6. Kristjansdottir trailed Boyd 5-6, but rallied for the win and advancement to the semifinals.  In the first consolation match, Thursday, Pavlovic beat Clark-Atlanta's Vanessa Jean-Baptiste, 8-2, to reach the quarterfinals on Friday.

On the opening day, Thursday, Pavlovic fell to Southern University's Lois Alexis in two sets, 1-6 and 0-6. Kristjansdottir dropped her opening match, 6-7, and 3-6 to Florida A&M's Symone Townsend. SSU returner Esmira Gheisary fell to Bethune-Cookman's Glory Zhou 5-8.

SSU senior Davita Washington fell in her singles match to Maria Cabane of Clark-Atlanta in straight sets, 0-6, and 1-6. Washington fell to North Carolina A&T's April Burrage in the consolation, 0-8.

Nicole Ashiedu dropped her match against Southern University's Kendall Bunch, 2-6, and 1-6. In doubles match, the team of Gheisary and Pavlovic fell to North Carolina A&T's Cayla Cross and Nianna Henry 3-8.

The preseason tournament does not count towards the Lady Tigers regular season. They open the 2013 campaign on February 1 in the new Tiger Tennis Courts on the Savannah State campus, against Albany State.
