SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State Tigers wrapped up the Spring Football Practice Season Saturday at T.A. Wright Stadium with the annual Orange and Blue scrimmage.
The offense in white with quarterbacks in orange scored two touchdowns, while the defense in blue jersey's recorded 24 sacks, forced two fumbles and grabbed one interception.
“I think spring practice went well for us,” second year head coach Steve Davenport said. “We've obviously got some things to work on, but we leave here today pleased with our spring session. We learned a lot about ourselves and figured out what we need to work on. We accomplished a lot of the things we set out to do, and any time you do that you feel good.”
The offense worked six series' in 1st and 10 situation, 10 plays in 3rd and 8, and 10 plays in 3rd and 3. In the fourth 1st and 10 session Victorian Hardeson found
Desmond Gantt for a 57-yard touchdown. Returning starter
Antonio Bostick put up the offenses next points with a 10-yard pass to Cortez Noble.
Overall, the White and Orange squad put up a total of 269 offensive yards with 110 coming on the rush and 159 on the pass.
The battle for the starting quarterback job continued Saturday as Hardison led with a total of 77 yards completing 3 of 3 passes. Freshman Hunter Vaughn was 1 for 7 with 14 yards and Bostick completed 4 of 9 passes with 68 yards.
Bostick led the rushing stats with 47 yards averaging 6.3 yards on 7 runs.
Sheldon Barnes put up 32 yards on 7 rushes.
“I thought Bostick has really come along in the last few weeks,” Davenport said. “I know there was a lot of talk and mention of the job that Vaughn was doing, but Bostick really stepped up his game over the last week and showed he's in this thing to compete, which is what you want. Barnes did a lot today to move the ball. I was pleased with the offense.”
Gantt led the receivers with a total of 70 yards on 2 receptions and a touchdown. Demarcus Moses followed with 34 yards on two receptions.
On the defensive side, sophomore
John Wilson snagged the only pick for the blue squad on a pass from Vaughn in 3 and 3 drills.
James Briscoe led in solo tackles with 5, followed by Wilson with 4.
With the spring session wrapped up, the SSU football squad will take a break for finals week and then open the summer session in early May with workouts. The team will add 23 newcomers over the summer and begin to nail down starting positions in preparation for the start of the 2012 season in September.
