Savannah, Ga. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers fell to Howard University, 64-51 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Tiger Arena Saturday afternoon in front of 920 fans.
The loss drops the Lady Tigers to 8-12 overall and 2-6 in the MEAC. Howard extends its conference wins to 6-2 and overall record to 14-7.
The Lady Bison jumped out to an early lead behind a 7-0 run as Kara Smith hit a short jumper to make it 13-4 with 12:55 showing.
After the run, Savannah State came within three points of the visitors lead on a good free-throw from Smiljana Cuk, making it 13-10. The margin was the closest the Lady Tigers came in the first half as the visitors extended their lead late, ending the half with a 10-point cushion at 35-25.
Savannah State shot 41 percent from the floor in the first half, while Howard managed a 44 percent clip.
Howard kept the offensive push up in the second half, extending their lead by 13 on a Nicole Deterville layup that made it 40-27 at the 17:31 mark.
The Lady Tigers continued to trade points with the Lady Bison, but never came within 6 points of the visitors lead. Savannah State shot at a 41 percent clip from the floor and 53 percent from the free-throw line. Howard shot 42 percent from the floor.
Jasmine Kirkland led the Lady Tigers with 15 points, her second highest of the season, followed by Ezinne Kalu with 13. Zadous Pollard and Rikiah Gatlin led the team in rebounds with 5 each. Saadia Doyle led the Lady Bison with 22 points, followed by Tamoria Holmes with 13.
