Tigers Win MEAC Opener

DURHAM, N.C.- Antonio Bostick ran for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead Savannah State to a 33-30 win over North Carolina Central at O'Kelly-Reddick Stadium before a crowd of 7,536.

SSU led 27-22 late in the fourth quarter but Byron Leggett intercepted and returned a Michael Johnson pass 50 yards for a touchdown with 46 seconds left to give the Tigers some breathing room, 33-22. Derek Williams missed the extra point.

Geovonie Irvine took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 81 yards for a score and Johnson completed a two-point conversion to cut SSU's advantage to 33-30, with 35 seconds left.

Savannah State received the kickoff and ran out the clock.

The Tigers may only be 1-3 but they are undefeated (1-0) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

NCCU falls to 1-3 and 0-1 in the MEAC.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the first quarter with Bostick scoring on a seven yard run with 10:28 left and Johnson throwing a five-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Nicely with 2:21 on the clock. Both teams missed the extra point attempts.

The key play on SSU's scoring drive was a 14 yard run by Bostick while facing a third and two at the NCCU 24.

Justin Babb put SSU ahead early in the second quarter with a seven yard touchdown run. Williams' extra point was good and the Tigers led 13-6 with 11:32 on left in the first half. The Eagles answered when Irvine caught a 18 yard touchdown pass from Johnson with 4:38 left but once again missed the extra point.

The key play on the Tigers scoring drive was a 26 yard pass from Williams to Leggett on fourth and 15 from the Central 41.

SSU led 13-12 at the half.

NCCU opened the second half with a long drive that ended with Oleg Parent kicking a 24 yard field goal to give the Eagles their first lead of the game with 12:20 left in the third.

The Tigers answered when Bostick threw a school-record 99 yard touchdown pass to Brain Lackey with 6:45 remaining in the quarter for a 20-15 edge; after Williams converted the extra point.

With ten minutes left in the game, Bostick scored on a five yard run to extend SSU's lead to 27-15 but Central closed their deficit to 27-22 with 2:42 left when Johnson threw a 16 yard scoring pass to Demario Lackey.

Big plays on the Tigers scoring drive was a 17 yard reception by Simon Heyward and runs of 9 and 10 yards by Sheldon Barnes.

Bostick ended the game with a career-high 200 passing yards and a touchdown. Lackey caught two balls for 107 yards and a touchown. Babb broke out of his slump for a game-high 93 yards on the ground and one touchdown. John Wilson had 12 tackles while Rahma Hemingway added 11 tackles.

Johnson passed for 315 yards and three touchdowns for NCCU while Lackey had nine catches for 104 yards and a score. Andre Clarke rushed for 68 yards for the Eagles while Brandon Outlaw had 12 tackles.

NCCU had 31 first downs and 420 total yards while the Tigers had 385 yards sacked the Central quarterback five times.
