Tigers Fall To Concordia

AUGUSTA, Ga.- Harrison Ellison kicked a 35 yard field goal as time expired to give Concordia a 23-21 win over Savannah State in the Southern Georgia Heritage Classic played at Laney Stadium.

Savannah State led 21-14 with just over nine minutes left in the game but the Hornets scored nine points in the final five minutes, fourteen seconds to earn the win and improve to 2-3.

Larry Kerlegan, who was named the Offensive MVP, threw a six-yard scoring pass to A.J. Ward with 5:14 left. The PAT was blocked and Concordia trailed 21-20.

The Hornets started the game-winning drive with 3:05 remaining from their own 18. The drive stalled at the Savannah State 18 with four seconds left before Ellison was called to attempt the field goal.

SSU scored on their first possession of the game by marching 64 yards in seven plays as Justin Babb scored on a 13 yard run with 13:19 on the clock. Derek Williams booted the PAT and the Tigers led 7-0. During the drive Kurvin Curry threw passes of 10 and 25 yards to Javares Taylor.

Concordia scored on their fourth possession with 13 seconds left in the opening quarter as Kerlegan threw a 16 yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Morris. Ellison's PAT tied the game at seven.

Midway in the second quarter, SSU went ahead 14-7 as A.J. Defilippis threw a 23 yard touchdown pass to a wide open Byron Leggett. Once again, Williams converted the PAT and the Tigers led by seven with 7:56 on the clock. Key plays on the drive were a 12 yard run by Babb and a pass interference call against Concordia when SSU faced a third and five from the Hornets 45.

The Hornets replied to the SSU touchdown on their next possession as Kerlegan threw a 20 yard scoring pass to Fred Rouse with 6:12 on the clock to cap a 43 yard drive. The drive was setup by Rouse's 44 yard kickoff return. Ellison's PAT tied the game at 14.

After a scoreless third quarter, Savannah State went ahead 21-14 after Babb scored on a 14 yard pass play from DeFelippis with 9:26 left. Williams kicked the extra point to cap the four play, 38 yard drive. DeFilippis threw a 27 yard pass to Deron Talley on the drive which was also aided by a face mask penalty that gave SSU a first and goal from the Hornets six.

The contest was marred by penalties with SSU drawing 10 flags for 122 yards and Concordia drawing 13 flags for 100 yards.

Babb ran for 74 yards to lead SSU (1-3) while DeFilippis threw for 95 yards and two touchdowns. DeFilippis also ran for 41 yards. Talley caught three passes for 45 yards. Although Edward Ndem was named the Defensive MVP, Antwan Allen led SSU with 12 tackles.

Deairdis King led the Hornets defense with seven tackles. Kerlegan passed for 323 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a team-high 33 yards. Ward caught eight passes for 67 yards and a score.
